Occasionally we are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to see and handle some truly amazing watches.  Below is the Il Giocatore by Daniel Roth.  This is the most unique automaton watch in existence today.  The watch has 504 different display combinations.  The minute repeater starts the action on the watch.  As the watch strikes the time, the Jester plays the dice game.  His arms move back and forth over each dice to reveal a different dice combination every time.  The candle also changes color as the action goes on.  You can play the dice game, on its own, by deactivating the minute repeater…..gives you something to do on the airplane  Truly a unique and fun piece.

All in all this was an amazing piece.  The tone of the chime was rich and crisp.  Very user friendly I might add.  You always worry that there could be some difficulty with a piece of this caliber.  The client and I operated this piece on a regular basis and never was there a problem.  Buttons worked smoothly.  I will post some additional pictures of the clock later today.

Here is a picture of the automaton clock.  This particular piece was made to match the watch above.  Although sold separately, each clock is made to match a specific watch. The clock chimes the hour which in turn starts the action.  The Jester plays the dice game as his eyes shift.  The owner can activate the game at anytime by simply pushing a button. Very cool indeed.

 

Wow, very cool that you were able to operate the repeater and play the action on the watch.  Thanks for sharing the pics and your experience.  Did you see other DR pieces?

Best images I have seen of the Il Giocatore. I have never quite appreciated the three-dimensionality of the dial before. A lovely 'novelty' repeater.
