How often do you come across a watch that you’ve never thought of before due to lack of hype, marketing or is just plain under the radar? No fancy brand name, thus low investment value for those who care and it would appear to be outside the scope for collectors. Yet you fall for it for no apparent reason than the fact that it appeals to you.
We are often affected and influenced a great deal by excessive hype/advertising/forum discussions and what the connoisseurs, for whatever reason consider to be highly collectable, rare and thus creating demand and price premiums. It’s somewhat like a herd instinct; when there is a queue for something; more likely the queue gets longer. To be fair, there are some things that are worth queuing for but for me rarely.
Well, I’ve learnt from experience not to rush into hasty decisions at the boutiques but to properly evaluate a piece with time and under no circumstances make a spontaneous buy, as it is so easy to do under the conducive environment and the persuasive sales talk. I’ve also decided to concentrate on only a few brands that make an impression on me and are synonymous with quality and reliability. However, my nature is such that I like living for the moment; spontaneity and joie de vivre is my forte and resolutions often go out the door.
My friends or fellow watch enthusiasts often chide me for going off track.
Well, I’ve done it again; call me weak but a few days ago on impulse I made the call on a watch that I saw for the first time. All I can say is, it feels great to just do it!
Up until now, I’m still delighted and consider it to be a good decision after living with it for the past few days .It has surpassed my expectations in comfort, accuracy, finish and in the looks department.
Here’s the oddball, a jumping hour Daniel Roth Ellipsocurvex Papillon. I’ve never before actually contemplated one of these as I like watches with hands but I fell under the spell of the big grin.
Here are some quick pix:

Thanks for looking.

It means a lot to me having your stamp of approval.Yes, it's an unconventional piece but as you said, passion is irrational and unexplainable.
Thanks for your nice reply.
All the best Nicolas

Especially so for difficult to get ones e.g. limited editions, low production pieces. That's my view.
Nice watch you've got. Thanks for sharing.
and I feel justified. Thanks for the compliment.

You still owe us a visit.

Interesting that we both recently bought a jumping hours-retrograde watch belonging to Bvlgari...you DR and me GG.
Somebody must have cast a spell

or maybe, subconciously I got influenced by some of your recent posts? I was also quite tempted by your GG - looks great in the metal.
The others I found a bit too large for my wrist.
Thanks for the reply & have a great evening Sam.

It is solidly built and relatively heavy because of the case design but due to the curvature of the caseback it falls nicely on the wrist.

it really appeals to me and i'm not surprised you fell for it. it has wrist presence and a smiley happy face to go with it.

a multitude of quirky pieces and with variety that runs the gamut, your nod to this piece is very appreciated Graham.
Good to hear from you.

The dial is simple yet all the information is readily available at a glance. Didn't take too long to adjust to reading the time.

I was wearing the DS when I went to try it on so it didn't feel too heavy or too big - just perfect!
Thanks buddy & all the best.

Great pictures and your Daniel Roth Papillon looks mighty sexy on your wrist!

If what Anthony said above is true,it's more of a chick magnet than a scratch magnet!

I have to admit that I don't know much about the Daniel Roth collection.
But I instantly liked it from the first time that I saw a photo of it. I just like the whole design and of course the jumping & retrograde complications just make it so very special.

Tony
Like you DR was never on my radar. However,on first seeing one and having it on the wrist, their was no denying - I just had to have it. My excuse: I needed a jumping hour in the fold. BTW, the minute indicators aren't retrograde but circle the dial.

Why oh why do you falter and stray from the Path when you were doing so well?
In this case, we, your watch buddies, forgive your transgression and impulsive exuberance.
That's a "good thing" you have on the wrist. Iconic combination of case, dial and display mechanism. I regret passing on the original Daniel Roth 'butterfly' and again was indecisive on this iteration. How petty of me to worry about the wide shiny surfaces on the dial?
Thanks for making me smile with that big grin of a dial!
Regards,
MTF
