VW Corrado, a ( too? ) ambitious coupé from VW?
1988... Volkswagen unveils an intriguing coupé. We are far from the angular lines of the Scirocco, the line is more sensual, sweet, almost noble for a car from this era.
The engine was promising... With the help of a compressor, the 1.8 reached 160 HP, when the 16V of the Scirroco had 130.
More power, but also more torque!
On the rear part of the car, you had an " aileron " which moved when you reached a certain speed, 120 KM / H, if I remember correctly.
The interior was austere, contrasting with the feeling on the road, as the car was very living on the road.
The major issue of this car was the price... In 1988, VW asked a bit less than 30 K Euros for it...
The outcome? The Corrado was not very popular....
VW quickly came with a 16 V version, 136 HP, without compressor, which was offered around 20 K Euros, but the car was anemic.
At the end of its life, the Corrado was gifted a superb engine, the VR 6, a very compact 6 Cylinders, with an outstanding melody, delivering some 190 HP. The best engine for this car, but the Corrado was stuck to its reputation of an expensive car...
I loved the Corrado so much that I owned the three versions. I started with the G 60, which I prepared to 190 HP... Which was great fun, and even more " living " than the VR 6, due to a bigger torque.
I also tuned the VR6, from Oettinger, and got some 225 HP... That was one of the loves of my life, I must say.

hi Amanico , we seem to have a similar taste in watches and now cars , I owned years ago a VR6 and only have good memories of that car and its fantastic engine

That was one of the few cars I regretted letting go.
The noise of the engine, no, the melody, was top.
The behaviour on the road, too.

I drove a few .. 16 V and the very first Corrado in Belgium (G60) ... i never owned one but my neighboor had two, his first was a 1.8 with 136 hp but he crashed it heavily while following a friend in his Passat VR6 ... . He then bought a 136 hp 2 litre but that appeared to be a very slow car that he sold pretty quickly ... .
This was the first in Belgium, a G60 ... i actually didn't like the sluggish gearbox .. 50 in first, 85 in second and then the revs dropped dead in third ...
These days i wouldn't mind owning a Corrado
The red one was a 16V 1.8 .. this was a pretty fast car .... check out the numberplate

Funny because I had the contrary experience.
My 16 V was mechanically improved, and I got 150 HP on it, but still, a bit anemic.
My G 60, I got 190 HP on it, and it was a bomb!
I didn't see how much a Corrado will cost nowadays, but it could well be a very interesting car to own!

It looks like a better looking US Volkswagen Scirocco.
Line are similar but better, much smaller B pillar.

Well, the First Scirocco was cool, the 2d generation was really ugly.
So, the Corrado is necessarily nicer!
