Patek Philippe

Lovely article!

 By: sham1 : January 2nd, 2017-12:43

Thank you Imran and Happy New Year to you!

My personal favourite among the beauties would be the 5959 and 5950!  I just love the ultra slim split second movement and it is quite amazing how they managed to put so much in something so small.

Best wishes,

Sham

Amazing article. Each piece so lovely and desirable. Really a testament to the greatness of PP! Thanks for sharing! [nt]

Very interesting reading and surprisingly my preferences are very close to yours.

I wish you and your dears a very good 2017.

Amazing article...

Imran,

Your article makes me to admire Patek chronographs, even considering the unreachable prices.

Congratulations.

Cheers,

Nilo

What a write-up!

Thank you Imran
Now, I am definitely dreaming of a 5170P, blue dial with a sector dial aka 1463...

Comprehensive article. These chronographs of Patek are gems / heirlooms to own.

Cheers to a wonderful post. My appreciation.
Geross.

Superb review, Irman.

These vintage Chronos with their sector dial are to die for. At 31 mm, a bit small, but at 36 mm, just perfect.

As for modern Chronos, I have a huge affection for the 5070 / 5970, and for the 5004.

Now, the 5370 is a marvel. I agree with you when you say that it is one of the best modern Patek ever. For its rattrapante movement, and for its black enamel dial. AND the case, too, is superb.

One of the very few Patek I like a lot, and one of the very few I would dream to own one day.

Merci for that article, Irman. It was a pleasure to read you.

Nicolas

Fantastic article. I don't know very much about vintage Pateks, so was a very interesting read.

One chrono you didn't mention, which would be a grail, is the 3670a - would love to hear your views on that one.

Great write up inran thanks these pieces both vintage and modern are still at the forefront of watch collecting [nt]

Patek chronographs are really a part of history of their own, just 2 remarks...

By: Mark in Paris : January 2nd, 2017-15:31
Thanks for reminding some of those references.

I would just add two remarks in addition:

- There were much more than the 130 and 1463 references between 1940 and 1970 (I'm preparing a write up on the same subject that I'll postpone for later since we have yours right now).
- The 5070 took in fact its inspiration from the 2512 reference (the black dial Spilt Second in the Patek Museum right now)

So much to say about these beautiful chronographs.

Best, Mark

Superb Post

Thanks for taking the effort writing this all up.

Nice to read

Thanks for putting this together Imran
Really my kind of post

Sounds probably strange to most of you but I prefer a simple chrono above a perpetual chrono

Saw some great watches in this thread

I also prefer a simple chronograph to a perpetual chronograph

 By: dr.kol : January 3rd, 2017-11:20
because a manual winding perpetual is not a very practical watch. Especially if one have more than two watches. Furthermore, the simple chronograph is much more sober.

Wonderful read!

Thank you very much for putting all this information in one place. Beautiful pictures.
Happy New Year

5975 is also under appreciated

 By: Patekphilippecollector : January 5th, 2017-22:04
Love this in blue dial for Baselworld

I do not think 5975 in under appreciated

 By: dr.kol : January 6th, 2017-00:04
It is just quite rare because it was made as an anniversary piece. I enjoy my 5975P a lot but just 100 pieces were made.

Best, Kari

True but you know it was also made in R, J and G at 400 pieces each

 By: Patekphilippecollector : January 6th, 2017-04:51
That makes a total of 1300 pieces equivalent to the 5976 and 75% more than the 5711P. I guess there are fewer 5070's produced and try far more air time goes to 5070 & 5170 and seldom in the 5975 mentioned. It also has a very nice movement with a vertical clutch.

5070-5170

 By: Bruno.M1 : January 6th, 2017-05:24
There are about 3200 5070 made
More or less 1000 per color R/J/G
And probably between 150 and 200?? p

5170.... no idea but if you allow me to guess I would say about 500-700 per year. So until now 4000-5000?

Thanks Bruno....helpful....had no idea there were so many 5070....this probably explains why there is more noise over these models than the 5975. [nt]

I think the "noise" has no correlation with production numbers.

 By: dr.kol : January 6th, 2017-09:39

Probably 5975 is not discussed that much because the movement is not very special. The dial and the case are something sexy while 5070 is sexy from all parts.

Best, Kari

Kari, that's the beauty of everyone having different tastes!! I think 42 mm too big, numerals cut in half lazy, dials too close together makes it bug eyed!! So not a fan of the 5070. My favourite is 5170 with breguet numerals and 40mm.

 By: Patekphilippecollector : January 6th, 2017-10:00
The movement on the 5975 definately isn't sexy but it works. A case of functionality over form. I stand corrected but think it's not a manual wind which I also prefer....Best Karl

5975 is automatic and it shares the same movement with 5980 but without date.

 By: dr.kol : January 6th, 2017-10:02
Okay, small modifications were made.

Best, Kari

So much noise because it is so beautifull

 By: Bruno.M1 : January 6th, 2017-11:59
And don't forget it took patek 10 years to make these, the 5575 production probably didn't take longer than 18 months or so

The movements of 5070 were really hand finished. It was a painful job.

 By: dr.kol : January 6th, 2017-15:04

I love my 5975 but let's face the fact: the movements inside the watches are pretty standard and mostly industrially made. No comparison between these two references.

Best, Kari

3200 is not that much. I would have guessed a bit less tough... Around 2500. [nt]
