Patek Philippe

I came across this watch 2 weeks ago. Its elegance and beauty are still very much in my head.

Sure I don't need another watch in a platinum case (trying to rationalize), and the lack of a display case back does obstruct views to the micro-rotor (nitpicking), but it's just so hard to imagine there're many watches that offer the same kind of classic charm.

Not having owned a Patek before, I can't help but wonder if this should be my first. Lots of dreaming...

Can't go wrong with that one. The 3940 has such a clean and legible dial layout.

That is one helluva bridge

was standard on the platinum versions for a while when display backs were used for gold models. Cannot go wrong with this watch.

and am absolutely delighted I took the plunge! Just such an understated watch and very wearable, as you know having tried it. Regarding the case back, I believe if you have the correct series PP will make you a sapphire back if you ask nicely. Hope this helps. James

The solid back wouldn't bother me, but to my eye this reference looks best in colored metals. There just isn't sufficient contrast with white metal. Only my opinion, and the beauty of the 3940 shines thru in any metal!

I think 3940p makes a lot of sense from the collecting perspective. The overwhelmingly positive feedback is yet another proof that it's well-loved by our collecting community. On a personal level though, it gets a little trickier. I'm blessed to have a first gen datograph, also in platinum. At my current collecting phase, I have a strong preference to give all my watches regular wrist time. The 3940 being an automatic perpetual calendar, it'd be worn on most workdays if I were to acquire it, which means significantly less time for the dato which I still love. 

if its ten years or more its needs service.....from the posts here could be a factor to consider.
