But are they actually any good for telling time? For me at least, these artistically designed watches are completely impractical as anything other than wrist jewelry. Dial is mostly illegible to my eyes. Beauty, of course, being in the eye of the beholder so as an adornment it may make perfect sense.

Curious if anyone buys them with any consideration for functionality, or purely decorative? What I'm sure for most is prohibitive pricing aside, do they appeal to the WIS community at large? For me, it's a resounding "no", but admittedly jewelry isn't my thing. I do appreciate the artistry and attention to detail required in creating such masterpieces though!

Maybe a wrist shot could convert me?!

Happy to oblige,

It's certainly not something that I would expect everyone to appreciate. But for those who do, it's something special.

Sincerely
H,

Thanks!

It's truly something special, and the light playing off the dial is almost magical.
Still it's just hard for someone like me to appreciate it as a watch, rather than as jewelry. Undoubtably a function of my more plebeian tastes.
Looks terrific on your wrist!

Thanks Sam!

I would respectfully disagree to use the word plebeian taste. Maybe it just takes an amount of time to see and understand to appreciate. I find myself appreciating things today that I didn't in the past.

Regards
H.

Your wrist shot makes the watch look so much more appealing! Totally agree, my tastes have changed and evolved over the years. [nt]

As have mine. This was the first handcraft watch I ever pursued, but this only came about after years of collecting and learning and understanding the craftsmanship and skill that goes into making these types of watches. Because of the time and skill required , only very few examples can be produced.
Unlike a Rolex for example which is mass produced for the commercial public.

Sincerely
H.

Agree.

Could not have put it better.

These are very unique and appealing pieces

When dealing with such craftmanship it is a very personal feeling to own one. I would not only think about the style but also the fact it remains rare and that they express the skill of the artists.

It's another kind of complication.

We'll see if they do more in the future.

Thank you for sharing H smile

A watch can be beautiful and beguile,

By: Time to watch : May 26th, 2017-14:41
It can do so for many different reasons and in many different ways . I would say any watch which is worn after consideration is a personal thing.

Thanks Mark

Hi H, fantastic "firearm" engraving duo that you have !

 By: GLau : May 26th, 2017-17:12
Hope Patek will continue creating them and you will continue collecting them !

Usually for this type of Basel limited production watches, how many would be produced ?

Cheers,

Gordon

Hi Gordon,

Usually very low production numbers, but nothing official. There is however a distinction between these two pieces. The 5088p was in fact a Basel only application watch, while the newer 5088p/100 features In the 2017 Patek Collection catalogue and can be ordered from your local AD. So I would imagine There would be many more 5088/100 produced over the course of a year.

The 5088/100 is not mine, belongs to my cousin. The pictures were taken during a meal

All the best
H.

For enamel dials for yearly Basel , usually 5 pieces each is my understanding.

Hence your application piece is likely 5 pieces only.
