Hi my 5053 seems to be developing "spots" resulting some discolouration along the edges of the dial. Does your 5053 has similar issues as well? Any idea what's causing this? Aging?
It should never happen on a watch of your vintage. Which raises the question if your watch was ever opened by a non Patek tech. When we see very old dials with deterioration it is not just from age along. It is a number of things. If the watch was stored in harsh sunlight when not worn or in humid conditions the chemicals and material will breakdown faster. The biggest factor though, is poor technique in serving the watch. In removing and replacing a dial it is far to easy to cause micro-traumas to the surface which result in small cracks allowing foreign material/ moisture to enter the dials finish. Then is the inadvertent exposure of the dial to skin oils and salts along with all the other cleaners, solvents and oils used in watchmaking. Folks often complain of the cost and time of factory service, but it is money well spent to have the watch opened in a dust and humidity controlled environment by skilled watchmakers.
