I like the above written comments a lot. First, you have to decide yourself if it is about collecting or wearing, if it is about value (creation) or having a smile on your face while looking to your wrist.
The 1815 or Dato is always a good alternative. But this you haven‘t asked for, so I don‘t want to bother you. Just in case ... ;-)
# My recommendation: if you can get the 5712 short term from your AD, gor for it. The 5170 is still „easier“ to buy, even after being discontinued.
# If not, gor for the 5170. It looks stunning at your wrist! Forget the comments saying it should not be Breguet markers on the dial. Why not? Just because 50 years ago a PAtek Chrono haven’t had Breguet markers on a Chrono? Someone has sometime to start with something ;-)
# 5170 is not a collector‘s watch? Not yet. Noone knows about future. For me it is a real admirable, stunning timepiece. For you the same. So if this watch is admired by us, why not by others? Collecting starts usually after discontinuation or during „active“ time through limitation. The 5070 is in my „poor“ understanding not a perfect watch. Quite big, a huge dominant bezel, ... not drawn harmoniously. As it is hyped „now“, everyone wants to follow. This is the definition of hype.
Be a trendsetter ;-) Go for the 5170! Maybe the 5170(P) as alternative ... This watch will likely be discontinued early next year.
Looking forward to your decision and your presentation
