In a way its a good thing I will have time to think about it when and if my name does come up

The combination of complications is quite unfitting
for a diving watch on paper but in real life it is an absolutely stunning piece.
The 5170 is the best base chrono so far from Patek
but collectors did not welcome it like its predecessor, the 5070.
If your decision is focused on a collectable watch then it is the 5712.
If you are focused on watchmaking then it is the 5170.

Appreciate the feedback - I am at the stage where I am looking for pieces that appeal to me aesthetically.
Of course I don't want to lose to much money on a watch, however ensuring that it is something I love to look at is imperative.

The 5712 is an stunning piece, extremely versatile and comfortable on the wrist. I really love it and would always recommend to buy it.

But to me current market price is simply too much.

But you must buy what sings to you.

Have made several mistakes in past ignoring my gut.

The only recurring complaint I’ve heard on this 5170 is that it may not be the most legible, the polished Breguet numerals may blend into the black dial a little too much in certain light. 

I believe Count de Monet was right in sharing that the 5170 (in any models) is lacking in love by the collectors. And here are what I have gathered from reading the past comments on the 5170:

1. YG Roman marker version - the Roman version doesn’t really fit into the chrono complication

2. WG Breguet numeral marker cream dial version - something doesn’t seem right as the subdials circles do not match with each other

3. WG black dial version - just not legible enough especially with the shiny applied hour markers

4. Platinum diamond hour marker blue dial version - the diamond while neatly done is not really apt for a chrono

Please take all these comments with a grain of salt and buy the one that really sings to you and not what others think.

Lastly, I was going through the same thought process of looking for a dress chrono that will complete my Patek collection (for now). Unfortunately even the famed 5070 doesn’t do it for me being too big for my wrist and looks a bit “cross-eye” IMO from my perspective.

Instead I have decided that I’ll get the equally respected Lange 1815 chronograph WG black dial which to my eyes is one of the most beautiful dress chronograph with a mesmerizing caseback showing its intricate movement. It may be a notch “lower” than the Datograph or even the Patek 5170 but I just love the smaller and thinner case and the lovely chrono movement displayed. Also it may not be perfect as others may say but that’s ok, it’s the dress chronograph that sings to me. I hope to get mine soon.

I have this watch and like it a lot. I wonder if in five or ten years if it will be thought of much more favorably, just as the 5070 was. Production run of 5170G black was not long.

Appreciate the view points expressed above. I did look at the Lange 1815 chrono however I did own a standard white dial 1815 a few years ago.
I don't have any patek's in my collection and had my eye on the 5170 for some time.
I did see the 5170 in the showroom so did not feel there was a lack of dial visibility. Maybe will stop by and try it on again.

I like the above written comments a lot. First, you have to decide yourself if it is about collecting or wearing, if it is about value (creation) or having a smile on your face while looking to your wrist.

I wish I could have all three at this time..
The 5712 will take time as I just got put on a list.
I really do like the look and feel of the 5170.
I tried on the 5170 P a few months ago however I love arabic numerals.
Will be sure to post once I pull the trigger

I’ve had tow AD’s tell me that are not getting any more 5170P’s, it’s being discontinued. There may be some left in stock but they are gong away...Jim

I tried this on a while ago. Whiles its a beautiful watch arabic numerals are for me.

as was said above, the piece is difficult to read (at least for me). i prefer the 5712A by far. if you want a hand wound chrono and if future value is of some importance for you then you should rethink the 5170P - inspire of the baguette markers. if you fell in love with the 5170G then just go for it. asa we all know, love is not sensible::))

Patek manual wind chrono has a beautiful movement if you look at the other side of the dial.  I hope you had a chance to look at the movement when you were at the Patek AD>

In fact I spent a lot more time looking a the at movement.

I had one. Sat a little too flat on my wrist. I went with 5270 a little more curved. Fit better.

When I chose my first PP these two were my exact same options. After a not so long search (both pieces were almost available in stock at any AD back then) I tried them both on and I had to choose the one. With my love for complicated horology I pulled the trigger on the 5170g. To me it was just in a different league complication wise. Also note I am an absolute fan of chronographs since I was 12years old and the fact I needed a bit more  of a semi-dressy watch because I did not own one at that time.
