How to build a Patek Collection
I’m really interested in building a long term Patek collection and looking for advice from you experts! I currently have the 5226G and the 5327G. How do you get “invited” to get some of the more difficult pieces like the 5231G etc?
It seems very hard and I’m not sure if it’s just time or volume.
For note I’m not looking to aquire pieces to sell on, just for my own collection

got both pieces from an AD, you already have a good relationship with them.
Just continue to visit and talk shop with your AD to demonstrate that you are passionate about building a Patek collection. To me, getting 5231 is about passion, time and volume now.

You have to pray ( normal circuit ) or to pay ( grey market ). But there is a life outside the sought after pieces: A " normal " world time ( 5110 / 5130 / 5230 ) would already an excellent and smart choice.
Very ambitious
Patek Philippe is a way too business for me, excluding the hand painted enamel watches which have not that strict perfection and ruler coldness.
For the movements they are ok.
The joy of variety in watch land offers a lot.

Start by NOT Buying from AD’s.
In my long time of collecting I leaned one thing, go to the source,
The AD is doing what’s best for AD. Not all of course but in general,
ADs changes policy, ownership or loosing its dealership etc, all in all you can invest years and money in building relationships and get back to square one…
If you go the Patek route, I’d only do it with Patek directly or it’s owned boutique.

i wouldn't limit myself to looking at only PP boutiques and ADs. Why?
Because boutiques and ADs offer only what is in the current lineup. If that is what you want, then that is only what you can get.
And that is if you are lucky enough to get your foot in the door. Where I live, I always get refused if I ask to waitlist for anything,
so I have I to seek at reputable grays. There, I look, I buy, and the watch is on my wrist on the same day.
In addition, there are lots of beautiful, vintage, antique, not-so-common older and even cute-looking vintage models from the past
that can be bought and add variety. They are still Pateks and age beautifully and can be acquired at more reasonable price points than
most of the current offerings. There are different ways to build a Patek collection. .
You save $200k buying nice, expensive watches…
…at a discount from the grey market. Then you pay a premium for the few watches (xx31, Nautilus, Aquanaut) that trade above retail. You break even or are slightly ahead without having to beg, plead, or wait for years. By the time you want a really hard to get application piece, you walk into a salon with tons of registered watches, and they’re happy to sell to a real collector.
