Should the Cubitus have a rectangular movement?
I’ve always been fond of non round watches and the one below is an all time favourite. What I love is the bespoke rectangular movement and I wonder if the Cubitus line would have been better received it had an appropriately squared off movement?

Would having a square-shaped movement look good with a large center-mounted rotor?
Given that the Cubitus is intended to be a sports watch, I would imagine that implies it will focus on automatic-winding movements. I am sure that a square-bridged version of the micro-rotor movements could look appealing, I am not so sure about the center-rotor movements. Would a square movement with a circular rotor look nice or would it look jarring? I suspect the latter.
I would not be surprised if there were thoughts about making a square-bridged version of the 240 for the 5822 at some point. However, I think if Patek had launched a 5822 with a square movement but the 5821 with the round movement it would not have pleased too many people.
In recent memory they squared the cal. 215 for some Gondolo watches. It just requires making new bridges and plates.
If they did this with the 26-330, a central rotor on a square movement might look weird.
They could use the cal 240 instead, a 26-330, but the 240 doesn't have sweep seconds or a date.

And it would certainly please the purists. But I guess that finally the verdict was it would not make enough of a difference to sales to justify the small investment necessary 🤷🏻♂️

…why is it that much harder to do a rectangular movement? Assuming the rectangle is larger than the original circular movement, could you not just make a larger rectangular baseplate but have all the gears and pinions in the same places as on the circular movement? So no re-engineering involved, just some dead space on the larger plate?
I want to emphasize that what you described, and I described above, aren't true shaped calibers.
The point of shaped movements maximize space usage. These are observatory movements from Daini Seikosha and Suwa Seikosha, the area of both is ~700 mm^2, and they are able to fit a much larger balance, barrel, and train than in a circular movement could in the same area. Squared round movements don't give better performance, while shaped movements do.

So just squaring a movement is just an aesthetic thing, but ideally you rethink the movement to maximize the space usage.
