Patek Philippe

I'm going to get a 5050J from a very nice gentleman :-) I was struggling between these 2 reference but finally gave in to the seduction of the 5050J because of its thinner case, interesting dial and nicer dial color (matt silver). The strong vintage vibe of this watch and its yellow gold case eventually draw me in. I like 3970R due to its classic status but I ask myself if both watches are not discontinued and readily available, which one will I pick? My answer is 5050 :-) I have like both watches for a long time and finally, a winner emerges from my heart. A question for 5050J owners. I plan to wear this watch often and may consider wearing it daily. What color strap is good for Yellow Gold case? I want it to reflect a strong vintage vibe with a casual elegant air to it. I wear jeans most of the time. No suit and no hermes ties for me ;-) Any suggestion? Also, what do you guys think about 5050R? Is it a lot better looking than 5050J? The last time I saw a 5050R was with Roman dial. I didn't get it as I prefer the baton style for this model. I kind of convince myself into this watch (my first yellow gold watch) as I thought the YG case reflect a strong vintage vibe. Let me know your thoughts.       I personally love the 5050J . It is IMHO an all time classic. I would say that a dark brown croc strap would suit it fine.It will go nicely with the 5970G.

My choice would be dark brown or black.
With the price of 5050 - I am sure getting both will not be a problem.
Also - see if you can get the quick release gold spring bars so you can switch
between both straps with ease and without any worry about scratching the case.



I understand that PP now offers these (spring bars AND straps with cut-outs)
on several models so it should be easy to get 2 sets of quick release spring bars as well
a two differently colored factory straps with cut-outs.
(as seen above on my 5135)

very easy......once these quick release spring bars are inserted in your straps - you can swap them
'in seconds' with a gentle slide while using your thumb nail ;-)

Several new Patek straps now also come with small cut outs to accomodate for these new style pins.

NOTE: Get the pins that have this little 'rounded bump-protrusion" so the straps can be easy
changed by using your thumb nail. (like used now on 5135.)....the reason why I am saying this
that Patek also has spring bars with this 'sliding notch' that it hidden inside of the strap
(without a cut-out) and one needs a special tool as not to scratch the case when removing those.

These pins (5146) do not have the 'rounded bump-protrusion" that one can easy catch with thumb nail.

U will feel excited.

Further, to me, the difference between a 5050R and a 5050J is not so great, so, if you want to pursuit a 5050R, why not take a 3970R?  It is a very stunning watch.

Anyway, to me again, 5050 and 3970 are the two most elegant contemporary complicated Pateks.  The other is 5016, but the price.....

Here's an idea for your 5050 - have a band made (by someone like ABP) in an exotic leather and/or colour - in keeping with the aesthetic sensibilities of an artist!!

Hi, CL, I know it's not that much "en vogue" today, but I happen to like yellow gold a lot.

But, I'm picky with the "right" colour - perhaps more than with other metals. It needs to have a certain "warmth" for me - in case of the 5050 it's very nice, IMO.

And, as you rightly point out, the dial plays an important role as well, again in this case closed to perfection for my taste.

Only thing I like more on the roman dial version is the moonphase "subdial" (without the shiny golden "ring") and the missing "automatic" but that's nit picking, I'd say :-)

As for the strap, personally I'd prefer a dark brown croco - here's a pic of a NOS, still in it's plastic and a bad pic, but you'll get an idea.

It happens to me that there's 3 yellow gold watches I like very much. They are the Lange PLM, PP 5050 and Roger Smith series 2. It really depend on the dial and the 'feel' of the piece. As for the dial of 5050, I have always hope that the 'automatic' is not there. I like the batons but, like you, I prefer the cleaner moonphase that is found with the Roman dial version. Hence my late decision in getting this ref. I guess nothing is perfect and I can and have to live with it :-) Will post picture once I receive the watch as I'm currently not in town. Lovesss*CL

Congrats CL, it's a great watch.  With respect to the strap, I always prefer brown alligator with yellow gold  wristwatches.
