Patek Philippe

Hi, this is my first time posting, have been collecting Panerai for sometime, but caught  the PP virus since a year.
I am being offered a discontinued 5056P by my AD, like it except the small dial. Should I save the $$ for the new 5146J or the 5056P is a piece I shouldn't miss!!

My PP collection:
3710/1A: sold to a friend a while ago, and regreted since
5070-white gold
5960-platinum
5712/1A
5135 grey dial/white gold

IMO, when buying Patek..there should be no compromise.

I would never buy a Patek unless I 'totally' like it......there would be no word
such as "except' while describing it

It seems from your post that there are aspects of the 5056P that you don't like, yet you are asking the forum if you should not "miss" it.  Don't intend to sound confrontational, but I am curious why you are even considering the piece if that is the case. Does your interest stem from the fact that it has been discontinued?

"true" that my interest stem from the fact it has been discontinued, I know I won't be wearing  too much of it  because of the size of the dial,  but I do enjoy to "collect" special pcs. This is the reason (me a newbie in PP) ask to the forum for advice if the 5056P is worth to acquire, of course there are still others on my wanted list.

.... IMO, I wouldn't look at this too "academic". There aren't that many "wrong" reasons to get inerested in a certain timepiece - it's an irational thing and there's no justification to spend that much money for a watch anyway 

By reading your post I'm not sure you already studied the watch in the flesh?
If not and you're only judging by what you''ve seen in pictures - I'd strongly recommend to have a close look of the real thing. IMO it's a very well propotioned watch.

I could imagine it's a bit small overall when coming from Panerai, but it's entirelycnsistent IMO - i.e. everything fis quite nicely, dial, case and overall proportions.

Don't forget to keep us posted on your final decision

5056P "Small size"? I don't understand your comment. No one had any complaints about case size, before the new annual calendars; which I believe are are all of 1mm larger.

At least the movement of the 5056P fits its case, unlike so many neww PP models that are blown up to suit current fashion trends.

I just can imagine that others, owning and wearing mainly larger watches (like Panerai) could see it as a bit small.

That's why I recommended to have a look at it in the flesh - I just re read my post above and am a bit curious how you could read some sort of "complain" about the size in there?

BTW, the movement versus case size is an entirely different issue - do't get me started on this
There are many aspects around this and in my humble oppinion it's not thateasy - there are many incredibly nice watches with larger cases and relatively small movements inside - but for good reasons.

My response was directed at the gentleman who seemed to have a sizing issue with the 5056P.

I can't recall any critical comments about case sizes, prior to PP announcing a flood of new models with increased diameter cases. The 3970 is a good example. Is the the 5970 any better for its larger size? Same movement though and big for big's sake.

Gentlemen, thank you very much for the cmts, you have all made your pts. Went back to AD and spent 1/2 hour looking at the pc again, can't disagree much for the movement, dial which are very very very nice and well proportioned....but when laid on my wrist, it didn't "call on " me.(I think this has much to do with the large dials I've been wearing)
Since I can't all the $$$ to spend w/o much thinking, my decision is "no" for this pc. I'll wait for my chance on 5980, 5140, 5712YG and5970WG.

Hi Peter. The 5056p exemplifies the best of both of its predecessors, the 5035 and the 5036/1. Furthermore, the diamond it bears hidden between its lugs hallmarks the white metal as platinum -- the first such use of a diamond by Patek Philippe. It is a relatively rare limited edition watch, which will only accrue in value over the decades. It's a terrific investment and, for the black tie affairs, it's just right. Sometimes, smaller is better.
