Sorry to start this with such a question but ... it is not as frivolous as it may seem at first glance.  Apologies in advance too if the topic has been debated to death already, just did not find it. So, here goes.  I am talking about the 2007 new model of the 5296.  The question is in the subject but really, what I would like, is be able to describe what both colours of gold inspire to some of us.  Being able to express in words some impressions might help me decide.  I start with the following. 

Seems to me that the WG would look right anytime, anywhere. Clearly not ostentatious.  Beautifully clear, simple, sober, with black strap, it is just not possible to be wrong.  So why do not these elements answer my own question?  Well, in some way, the RG may bring a tiny bit more of a sense of "occasion" (if that makes sense) with its warm red-ish hue.  I will most likely not wear every day but at the same time, I do not want to keep it in its box either, that's for sure.  And maybe that's why I am still lingering over the RG idea.  I guess what I am probably saying is that I find RG superb but (maybe) would not appreciate it as much as time goes by, whereas the WG maybe slightly less striking at first, but appreciation will remain timeless?  Any thoughts or comments much appreciated.  Thanks.

It comes down to your personality and lifestyle and what makes you happy. You could spend the price of the watch on psychoanalysis and still not figure it out. The "cheap" way is to go to your nearest dealer and try both on, then imagine yourself in various circumstances and ask yourself wearing which one makes you feel happier, etc.

If you still don't have the answer then don't buy either. That way you won't have buyer's remorse 5 minutes after you got home.

FWIW. I much prefer wg or pt as I'm the only one who knows what the watch is made of. If I wore rg or pg it would be much more "obvious".

you prefer the RG but you are thinking that WG may have a better Return-On-Investment (ROI).

I think I don't have to compare the benefit of RG vs WG for you as you knew that already (from your writing).

Let's come to the root cause of your "problem".... ROI...  Under the current market, WG is, in general, have a better ROI.

Think about this: say 5 years later, if the WG give you 10% more return than the RG (not guarantee) , would you pick WG because of that?

OR  would you be happier if you could enjoy the RG (the one that you really like) for 5 years and give up the potential 10% extra ROI (again not guarantee)?

Having said that, no one can tell you the future. Potentially, RG may be better later for various reasons down the road....

To be honest, I don't think that difference would be that much for 5296. So, I would suggest you to buy the one that you really like.

Thanks for your comments.  I would like to clarify something about the last one, really I am not thinking about ROI in the slightes, I would have no problem admitting it if I was ... but not the case.  That one is a gift, one for the keep, no matter what.  I guess it was more of a "poetic" exercise.  But overall you've both guessed.  I know which one I prefer today but not sure that'll be the case in some time.  And believe me, I do understand the silliness of the question and the common sense advice ot trying them on.  Just was interested in hearing opinions from other parties who share interest in these watches.  I could have detailed how much time I spent looking at other models and how and why I came to this one, but since I have now narrowed down the choice to that one, I focused on that question.  Obviously I am not looking for a "definite" answer, as there is no such thing, and ultimately, of course, it is down to my taste, but still found interesting to read what others thought.  I think sometimes you just know what you prefer in such an obvious manner, there is no hesitation.  And sometimes, well, it is not so clear cut, just because there is no bad choice. Anyway, sorry for such long post, must be boring the pants off you now (-:  Cheers for the inputs!

I have re-read your posting and I must be silly enough to tie the word "appreciation" with ROI. Ha ha...

For selecting between WG/RG, I think you can ask yourself what you want and what you want the watch to do for you...

For WG, it is understated. No one can tell at a glance that it is a WG or Pt or SS. It is not eye catching in general. It is especially true for a simple 3 hands watch with a plain dial. Is it what you want? Do you want your watch NOT to tell other people something about you?

For RG, it is shiny. It gives other people a luxury feeling. As I said in the past, most people would think that it is an expensive watch even they have no idea about PP. I don't know why but solid "color" gold watch do give some kind of luxury feeling that a common (few hundred USD) gold-plated watch cannot give even they all have gold color. Is it what you want? Do you want your watch to tell other people something about you?

I know of a few people who only wear white metal watch; I also know of a few people who love to wear shiny, eye-catching watch. I don't think there is any right or wrong.... In the end, it is your taste that matter.

that after reading your thoughts sharing, i believe that the white gold would be most connecting to you. why is it so?

simply because the mood of the white gold will surely give you the ease at temperament, the white gold in my favor has a more cool and

calm attitude inspired to tranquilize true affection for horological aficionados like yourself.  thats what i believe, hope it helps.

Hello!  I recently purchased PP 5296 WG. I have tried wearing it in formal attire, business,  casual,  even when I'm wearing sandals and it looks great. In one of my formal meetings, my client can't help but  express his appreciation for the watch. By the way, I'm in the construction business, meeting people who knows something about watch. It's clean and simple but elegant especially in casual wear.  I'm more than satisfied and likes wearing  it more often than my other complicated ones.

This is very much a matter of personal preference, for me the decision was easy as I much prefer the finish of white gold, as opposed to rose gold. I became the proud owner of a 5296G barely two weeks ago, my description of it would probably be 'understated elegance'. It is my first Patek and is a significant addition to my small, but growing, collection - needless to say that I should have invested in a slightly larger watch winder last time around!

I have an rg 5296 since last June. Had the same dilemma between rg and wg. I don't regret my choice at all. It is a very beautiful watch to wear.

I just bought the RG 5296. I chose it for 2 reasons: Firstly I was looking for something a little dressier, and I feel that it fits that description. Second, and more importantly to me, I like the contrast of the RG with the silver/blue of the dial. The contrast really enhances both the dial and the bezel.

In the end, what matters most - IMHO - is how you feel when you roll up your sleeve and see what is staring back at you. For me, there is just something special viscerally about how the RG feels  on my wrist.
