Dear all forum participants:
I will have a chance to purchase a Lange Dato RG/Black Dial or a PP 5110p at a nice price. I can't buy both because I can't afford both at the same time. I like the Dato because it is an icon from the House of A Lange. I also like the RG/Black Dial combo because it is rarer. I havent' seen one in flesh but I will get a chance to try it on before I decide. I like the 5110p because it is a watch that I can use when I travel around the globe. My work brings me to Europe, Asia, and across the US. It is also the most powerful world timer in the market. I prefer the platinum version because it is a white metal watch with a blue center dial (looks pretty and better than the WG, which to me is too bland). I will also have a chance to try it on before I buy.
I want to hear your thoughts. I know I am the one who will ultmately make the decision but I still want to hear others think.
BTW, can anyone educate me why there is a premium of the 5130p over the 5110p? They are essentially the same watch. Thanks.

5130P DOES NOT have a PREMIUM over 5110P.
The only reason there is a different in price is because Patek increases their list price year on year (most years), and when they launched the 5130P after discontinuing the 5110P, the price increased, in line with the rest of the models.
If you think carefully, what you are saying is exactly why a 5167 has a premium over a 5065, however, the only reason a 5167 list price compared to the list 5065 is because they belong to a totally different production yea! A datograph this year also definately cost more than one bought 5 years ag! Logic!
Anyway, i'd say both watches are brilliant, the datograph is big and chucky, looks robust! I feel thedato oozes the feeling of a very very solid, buff, attentntion seeker (no offence). I would associate it to what someone who bench press100pound weights, i.e ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER!
The patek, well.. it's a totally different ball game, it reeks of smooth, gentleman class, charm, something which like how suave james bond, less his destructive behaviour!
Well, i chose the 5110P, it'spractical, discreet but most importantly, it speaks to me! But both watches are really amazing, you should find a way to try both on before deciding.

I am not referring to the list. I am referring what is being sold in the market. One has to pay more for a pre-owned 5130p compared to a pre-owned 5110p. I do buy your logic about the list price increase if I am buying brand new from an AD and these ADs are hampered by how much they can discount from the list. However, I am not talking about that. I am talking for example in an auction. Does this perspective make a difference?
BTW, I certainly do not bench-press 100 lbs.
I definitely identify what you describe about the 5110p. But I still like the dato (only the RG/Black Dial because of its rarity) and in general because of its movement and it is hand-wound.
I am still torn. Probably I have to wait till I try both on side by side. Cheers!

i understnd what you are saying now. However, if you think of the resale market, the 'premium' which the 5130 has over the 5110 is purely because the 5130 is a newer model, so, the 2nd hand market would make it seem it is more 'expensive'.
But to think it through carefully, for example, 25% off list price for 5110 on the 2nd hand market vs. a 25% off a 5130 on a second hand market would draw us to the same conclusion that 5130 has a 'premium', purely those who bought the 5130 paid a higher amount for their watch from the retailer!
Now's too early to tell if the 5110 would have a stronger command over the price in the long run if your are purely thinking of the 2nd hand market.

I own a pp5110G for some time but dont use it anymore. It is a gorgeous but awkward watch for daily use. The primary reason is the hr and min hands are too similar in size and shape. Thus it can be difficult to discern, for example, whether it is 10 min after 10 o'clock, or 10 mins to 2 o'clock. You literally have to closely inspect the watch to figure out the correct time. This is especially a problem when you are traveling around the globe - which this watch suppose to help. The new 5130 solved this problem using older hour hands. The other nuisance associated with this watch - if you are wearing it on your right arm - is that sometimes you can hit the push botton which is at 10 o'clock against a surface and dont even know about it until later. I first discovered this problem when one winter day it was still sunny at 6:00 PM (it was actually 5 pm, but I accidentally hit the push button once earlier). This problem is still there even with the newer 5130 models. On the bright side, you will never miss your flights or your appointments ever with 5110 or 5130. Therefore, my favorite daily wears are 5146P and 5140G. Cheers. Jim
