I have the opportunity of acquiring the 3712 steel nautilus with moon phase and power reserve and date. It was purchased in 2005 and since has been kept in like new condition. Iam a big fan of nautilus and have the 3710 and the 5726. Can anyone suggest that is it worth paying extra to get this one or just stay put. I mean to ask in terms of collectibility and also the appreciation down the road.

Are you buying the watch to wear it or collect it?
If you want to wear the Nautilus, why don't you buy 5712? If you want to speculate with the future value of the watch, it's another issue.
However, the world economy does not look too bright. In Europe we have still Portugal, Spain, Italy, Belgium... If the problems with these counties can not be solved, we will end to a situation where the whole global economy will be shaking. Then the speculative values of watches are just what the expression suggest: speculative.

I would suspect the answer lies somewhere in
how much the opportunity will cost. A large premium might dampen my desire but a reasonable premium to get a piece I had the hots for.. that's no longer made? Why not?
I like the 3712 as well but I question the "collectible" status and its perceived value down the road. I think you are very much aware of the 3712 along with the other Nautilus models and the market, but more importantly, how fickle the market can behave.
I recently purchased a Patek which is about 22 years old and paid about three to four times its original list price. It's not a piece that folks talk about on the forums, it's reasonably small, non-complicated, very few exist, I don't know if it made sense or not, I don't know if it is going to be worth even what I paid down the road, I didn't think twice, the price was high but an opportunity for this just doesn't show itself often, I wanted it and ... I got it.
Everyone has their own reasons for spending money on "necessary" things like this and it doesn't have to make sense to anyone else.... but you.

Its a rare beast....but
its already double the retail.... not sure how much further, especially in light of the 5712...
personally, buy it if you really really like it, or hold on in case anything good from basel

Dont do it - thats The rule I use, and more often than not, that turns out right! I understand your dilemma, As I have been there several times. Dont do it for the investment (for several reasons), do it, because you cant help it!
