Patek 5140P vs 5140G Opinions appreciated
Finally I was able to see the 5140P in the metal and put on my wrist. Stunning watch indeed. Although I liked it very much and considering the purchase, I am hesitant because it looked a bit like fashion jewelery. My 5140G looks very understated and timeless next to it. Am I over-reacting to the gorgeous dial of 5140P ? Since I wear my watches daily, I do not want them to stand out too much and/or lose interest in wearing them. 5140P stroke a strange chord in my mind that I may lose interest in wearing it because of its fashionably good looks. Although perceptions are very personal, I still will greatly appreciate the opinions of Patek forum members on this topic. Thanks and cheers. Jim
I don't see the 5140 as a fashion product.
Blue has been used for a while on Platinum PP watches ( as, for example the 5110, 5130, 5070 ... ).
Now, the question is: Will you get rid of it, compared to a 5140G?
That is the true question.
In your case, from what I read, you'd better pass on it: You're not convinced, you have doubts, and you seem to really appreciate the understated 5140 G.
I would keep this last one.

Agree that the 5140P is an "eye catcher". Less understated than the G. If you are hesitant about the P, and want something a bit more noticeable than the G, try on the "budget" model......the 5140J. Has a vintage sort of look, and who knows, yellow gold might even come into fashion one of these days!!

To help you in your "misery": yes, the 5140 p looks a bit playful with the white print and white hands.
You must like it or you simply leave it.
I personally would choose the YG model if I would get me a second 5140 at all.
My first choice would have been the 5140 or even better the 3940 in YG anyway, as I like yellow gold.
The metal is not a matter of fashion at all as one fellow Purist stated: it is more a cultural and preference thing.
Back to your case: do not get it if you have doubts as it is far too much money at stake...

Too blue for me...
I really was looking forward to the 5140P coming out. I sold a 5070P because I just couldn't fall for the overall design of that reference, but I missed that gorgeous blue dial! I thought the 5140 with blue dial would be the perfect answer. When I saw it in the metal it just didn't have the same impact as the 5070 blue dial. It is brighter and "blingy-er" than I had hoped and my impression was that it would not stand the test of time.
Just to confuse the matter further, I recently traded my 5140G for a 3940P. After a lot of analysis, I kept leaning toward the subtle differences of the 3940 over the 5140. If you want to drive yourself crazy, contemplate that one for a while!

3940P as well
Yes, I also considered seriously the 3940P. Two reasons I did not get it: Most importantly no exhibition back. That was surprising as 3940G had both the metal and exhibition backs. The 3940P also look a bit small on my wrist. Too bad I cannot order an exhibition back. Cheers. Jim
