Patek Philippe

I was wondering if any of you who have seen or owned the original tang style clasp on their 5960P have any opinions on it vs. the newer calatrava style clasp. Any ideas why Patek discontinued the former? Is the newer one more expensive if bought separately? Owner preferences in terms of style or function? Thanks in advance for your help as always

For me, it is a matter of personal preference. I am not a fan of the calatrava cross deployant clasp - I find it a bit awkward looking, and a little too obviously "patek". If I were buying a patek today, I would decline the calatrava cross deployant, opt for a simple patek tang buckle, and hope that patek offers a more understated deployant in the future. But, it's just a matter of personal taste........no right or wrong.

as it "feels" more secure than the chevron tang that originally came with my 5960p.  The tang flipped open out of the hole a couple of times so I asked PP what the solution for this problem would be and they discreetly offered to exchange my tang for the Calatrava cross with no extra charge!  In fact, it was mentioned to me that PP no longer uses the tang on the 5960p.  I "think" that the tang design may have had some undisclosed issues which allowed PP to upgrade me to the Calatrava cross.

You hit the nail on the head, when you mentioned issues with the older type clasp.  According to someone that I spoke to at the Patek Boutique, they had problems with the "Chevron" clasps.  I was told that the either broke or opened causing the watch to fall off the wrist and damaging the watch.  Those unfortunate people were compensated for their damage.

I have one of each and prefer the look and profile of the Stern clasp to the Calatrava Cross clasp.  The former lies flush with the strap, while the latter protrudes a bit.  I'm unaware of any functional difference.

I have also owned both types of clasps and in my experience the cross clasp was not best suited to fit my smaller wrist, as it didn't lie flat on my wrist.

Which on several occasions led, to me catching the clap on furniture as I walked past, thus causing the clasp to open. 

And not sure what would be better but I feel it lets the watch down.......As I am a huge fan of the original 5960p....

My 5296 came with a simple tang.
Bought the deployant because it's far more easier to close and safes the strap.
But best part for me is the white gold calatrava against the glossy blue aligator strap.
This part gets aas much looks as the watch itself...

Went from chevron to Calatrava, Feel a lot safer now as I also
experienced involuntary openings too many times for my comfort,
Now all is well.

I feel the same and I want the Cala one now
