lots of love for yellow gold right now but when manufacturers make a model available in white/yellow/rose, yellow seems to come a distant third in terms of sales.

Good point about the far east markets preference for yellow gold though.

No one wears yellow gold. - very absurd!

A very absurd remark i must say. Let us not forget that watch companies cater to a vast number of watch afficionados, and for sure there are those who prefer the classic yellow gold. Im sure that all of us understands what Taste means. All the best!

a hyperbolic comment for emphasis is not necessarily "absurd" if it is based in fact.  I did not think you would take my comment literally as in zero people buy and wear yellow gold watches....

The fact is, for high end watches, yellow gold has been far less popular than white gold and rose gold for more than a decade.  You can ask any watch dealer if you are one of the few collectors that does not know this fact.

In case you still do not understand, my original post was commentary on that fact that many people REALLY want to own a patek in house chronograph but have not picked up the 5170J because it is in YELLOW gold.  Thus they were hoping for a R and G version at basel 2012 this year.

I have personally seen the 5170J languishing in dealer windows in HK, Tokyo, Taipei, Singapore, and Jakarta (all asian cities supposedly filled with yellow gold lovers)  This is a watch that would undoubtedly have a waiting list in the R , G, or P versions.

So while I am happy to hear that there are still yellow gold watch lovers out there, you guys totally missed the point of my post, which is that a 5170R or G would be a real crowd pleaser.

I realize that patek is not a company that just "gives the people what they want", else they'd make nothing but endless limited editions of nautiluses and become the nautilus company in the vein of AP and RO.  Patek's aloofness is actually a big part of its charm, like the beautiful girl who ignores you, making you want her all the more.  But Im still hoping for a 5170R for 2013.

I am very aware that what you are trying to emphasize is your disappointment in this year's new release of watches from patek, but in doing so, you stressed that YOUR preference should be the gauge of what is suppose to be desirable for the rest of humanity. "Nobody is wearing yellow gold" ? a hyperbolic statement you say, but in saying so, you are telling us explicitly to ride the bandwagon that yellow gold is out - that all things non-yellow gold is "in".

You have mentioned that you have seen a lot of 5170Js languishing in ADs in various Asian countries. Are you certain that the reason they have no buyers is because they are crafted in yellow gold? I dont think so. I myself have asked several ADs in and out of my country and the main reason why the 5170 is quite hard to move is because of its prohibitive price. patek has raised their prices to a level that few people can now afford. And of course Not to mention collectors comparing the price of a 5070 to a 5170.

All of these boils down to the basic virtue that all of us should exercise prudence whenever we make statements. For sure, our statements have their intended meaning, however, we should also bear in mind that our statements are open to a vast number of interpretations that goes beyond our intended meaning.

I rest my case. All the best and kind regards!

Well said and spoken like a gentleman....

.....and may i add that yellow gold will be with us for eternity.   each timepiece has a certain quality of it's own, some lend themselves to Platinum, some to RG and MANY others to YG.

Spoken like a true professor lecturing a student ;)

No one wants to pay an exorbitant price for a simple and useless chrono function...

What is so 'Patek'  about this watch I really fail to understand ...

just my opinion ofcourse...

Although me and Edward didn't see eye to eye in a previous post...

... I would have to agree with him on this one, I most definitely think that an offering in either rose or white gold would be a fantastic addition to this family of watch. In my opinion, I do agree that these two metals are more appealing to me being a younger collector, but thats just my opinion. The 5170 still looks great in yellow gold though, maybe not as good in my eyes as the other two potential variants, but I don't think that that is the reason as to why it isn't selling as well as people would initially think. Aron may be right regarding the fact that potential buyers of this watch could be swayed by the 5070 and it's cheaper price tag. Even if it is based on a Lemania movement, I actually prefer the prior to the new model, something about the space between the numbers and the case... But that's just me.

Anyways, just my opinion,

Enrique

Great to hear from you guf.

I must admit that i myself am waiting for the other variations of 5170s. I would be very happy, if the fates allow, to have all four. smile all the best!

Ambitious!

Well, if ever you need to sell a couple of pieces to fund those 4, you know the number to the local recycling bin if you know what I mean wink

Cheers!
