The elegant 5056P
What a relief to find that the world didn't end on December 21; this one only arrived today.
A real pleasure on the wrist, and endlessly fascinating to look at. In reviewing the many posts on this reference, I was particularly taken with the "controversy" over the small diamond between the lower lugs. It's really only visible to the wearer, and is like the watch is winking at you - as if it knows just how much you enjoy looking at it, and doesn't mind it!
My first watch with a Power Reserve. Those 5 red dots are a tiny bit of color on the otherwise monochromatic dial.
The white moonphase and stars are beautiful and haunting. I much prefer the applied Roman numerals to the arabics on the 5146 that followed this one (not that I would mind adding one someday!). And I was also surprised at how legible the month and day are when the watch is on the wrist. Maybe this watch just makes me see better, it is possible.
The contrast with my other annual calendar, the 5135R, is dramatic. Subtle, discrete, and understated vs big, bold, and, ah, overstated
I love 'em both, and it so nice to have such different
options. I think they will get along well with each other!

Two lovely watches... I have long admired the 5056, and have my yellow gold 5135 on my wrist right now!
I bought my Calendario before the rose gold watch was introduced, but I must admit it would have been my choice as I love the warm tone of the rose gold case...

This one has been glued to my wrist - well, except when going to the gym It is also not safe to drive while wearing this watch - I keep looking at it!
It looks like it will be extremely versatile - originally thought of it as a white metal watch to wear to the office. But in wearing it around the house this past weekend, it perfectly complements more casual attire. That little diamond winked "yes" at me when I inquired about that!

The Lume - not so elegant :)
The lume-filled hands and romans look very nice in the light, but how about in the dark? Hmmm, not so great. Only the downward left to right stroke is filled in the X and V, and this presents a rather confusing pattern in the dark! There is no special mark at the 12, I mean XII. So to orient the hands, you have to look at the lack of lume at the 6 position, where the date resides. But would you really associate that gap with VI?
There appear to be two different types of luminescent material used for the hands (greenish) and the romans (bluish). Not sure how strong they were when the watch was made in ca 1999, but 13 years later it really isn't easy to read in the dark, even aside from the chicken-scratch patterns. Particularly as you can watch it fade significantly over a minute But... I think I'll keep this beauty anyway!
f/5, 10 seconds exposure, Nikon 85 mm macro, Nikon D80 used for all my pics in this thread. OK, here's one more!
