from Patek per se. I do believe they do read the posts to see what experiences Patek owners are having.
I like large format photography and participated on a forum relating to Linhof large format cameras and an expert associated with the US distributor regularly participated answering questions regarding the use of the products or how they were to be used. He never got into the type of questions that I believe you may want Patek to get involved with. Watches pose different issues due to use, meaning that your definition of light everyday wear, I may consider to be heavy abusive wear. And, a lot of issues discussed here may be related to performance and/or service issues which are directly influenced by a factor which no one knows but you and your perceptions.
For example, I can't begin to tell you number of ladies coming in repairs and the statement commonly heard is something like this, "I was just sitting in a chair and the necklace just fell off my neck", or " I am very careful with my ring and that missing prong was defective". Believe me, the piece tells the story and excessive wear or abuse is readily obvious. Explaining that to the owner is very challenging at times. There instances where there is no obvious explanation. I had a lady that we made her ring using a platinum under-bezeled setting and the platinum wire had cracked in two or three places. No visible signs of abuse, just normal wear after 20 years. Of course, we took care of the problem but I have never seen platinum wire crack in that manner in the almost 40 years of business. I can only attribute it to the metal and how it was drawn, still stumped by it. Should I be responsible after 20 years? Technically, I don't think so, but my name is inside the ring. I wasn't about to charge her for something she had no control over.
I got similar comments regarding watches. I had a client who bought a 3800 1JA wore it daily and his wife brought it in because the bracelet had come apart mid way from the clasp and case. Send it to HSWA and got the estimate back which included the cost of a new bracelet. I called him with the estimate and his response was he was always very careful and babied the watch. If you had seen the watch, you would have thought it had been through a war, I even apologized to the repair department for its nasty condition. He went on ranting about the watch and I finally said, Charlie, I have a new watch in the case, I'll have HSWA return the watch so you can see the difference yourself and then tell me you babied it. He had the repair done and that was that.
The point is many people do not take responsibility for almost anything when there is someone else to blame.
I was a former AD until five years ago and am happy to share my experiences as they may apply. I am sure there are issues that no AD could answer directly, only from what was told to them by the distributor.
I think you can see from the previous posts that Patek's direct involvement in this forum could lead to other topics very quickly and get out of control in a nano second. I think it is better to get it off your chest here and get feedback from others with their insight that Patek will see when visiting the forum.
