5110P vs 3940G?
Hi everyone,
After several modern Pateks, I am looking to add a more vintage looking piece. My budget is $40K. I am looking right now at 5110P or 3940G, which are somewhat similarly priced. What would be your recommendation? Or do you have other suggestions? I do have a calendar Patek (AC 5205G) but I guess the PC wouldn't be too much overlap.
Greatly appreciate any advice. Also, I would be grateful if someone could PM a good and not too overpriced 2nd hand dealer in the US who might have any of these watches.

First let me just say that you have impeccable taste. Asking to chose between these two beauties is like asking me which of my children I love more. Both are special pieces, unique and magnificent each in their own way.
The platinum world timer is an absolute gem, a crown jewel in any collection. The PC on the other hand is as pure and as classic a Patek Philippe as anyone could ever hope to own.
Usually with a 'this or that' inquiry it is easy for me to dispatch the lesser option. In this case there is no lesser option. You have selected 2 of the most desirable IMO. If it were me I'd have to sell/trade the AC and get both! Trying to decide between these two would always leave me with a sense of longing for the path not taken. Sometimes it's best not to open Pandora's box.

If you absolutely can't part with your AC then I'd go for the platinum world timer. It's platinum. It's a world timer. What more could anyone ask for?
To me the AC/PC is redundant.

Very tough choice, and the 3940 is a grand complication, BUT my vote goes to the 5110P. It's the king of the World Time genre in the holiest of metals. That's hard to pass up. Plus, the fact that Patek waited DECADES before resuming production of a World TImer really makes the 5110P extra special.

The good news is that you won't go wrong with any of these two.

Normally I would have answered " go for both ", but not in this case.
Because, for me, when you consider adding another Patek in your collection, it should have a different movement.
And the 5110, as well as the 3940,share the same movement.
In this case, if I had one to choose among these 2, I would go for the 5110P.
In fact, I had the choice, and I decided to go for...
This complication makes me dream, the dial makes me so happy. Unconditional love for this one!

I have 5130, 5205 and 5127
and I am also thinking about 3940...
Given your collection i would go for 3940 first... its amazing watch and i doubt that PP will produce the 37mm perpetual in the nearest future.
I am also looking for brand new old stock 3940 in rose or white gold.
Ed, I have to agree.
There was a moment when I had side-by-side 3940G & R plus 5110P & 5131G.
The perpetual 3940 is really in its best in white and red gold.
Both of the mentioned World Timers are beautiful watches. But let's face the fact; those are far from being practical. Ed, when you fly from Moscow to Geneva, how many pushes your World Timer requires? I guess Moscow is nowadays GMT +4 and Geneva is GMT +1. It means that in order to shift your watch from Moscow time to Geneva time you need to give it 21 pushes! The World Time is to travel only towards east! Flying from London to Paris the time zone adjustment needs one push. Flying back it needs 23 pushes. It's quite stupid and even one of Patek's executives admitted that to me. Just compare with i.e. 5134 or the new Aquanaut - those watches are made for traveling while World Time represents for me a watch from where you can see all the time zones.
In my mind the World Time represents a very small complication while Patek's perpetual 240 movement is among the very finest and sure thinnest perpetual movements ever made.

Thank you very much for some great enabling here. I am still not set though since I need to see these watches first. Kari surprised me that 240 movement in 3940 is better finished than in 5110 since it is a grand comp. Anyone has those two side by side? Does Patek do that? I thought the finish of the movement would be the same even for the "simplest" Calatrava. In any case, thank you Kari and Ed for suggesting strongly to look at 3940. In fact I have not considered this one at all in the begging. Now, I am intrigued. One issue that bothers me is that white gold in the past, Patek used to plate it. Is that an issue that I should consider? Does it need to be replated now and then?

You are right with your World Time. I can tell you a secret: 5110P is very very difficult to read and 5131G is even more difficult. When wearing my enamel dial, I chack the time from my mobile phone.
So no 5140P. These are for sure much easier:

Thanks for those examples. Indeed, the photo says it all. I am not getting 5131 though (if I could I would of course!). I will make a trip and have a look at these watches. Got to see them. I have handled 5140 and liked it a lot. Will have a look at 3940.

This watch is not only beautiful (wow, its blue guilloché !) but also have unbelievable charm… When you wear it at your wrist, you travel in your head !
The 3940 is another great classic of Patek, both would be OK but choosing is giving up ;-)
Go for the 5110 P, you won't be disappointed.
