I think the idea came at a dinner or a lunch. We spoke about the possibility to put a Nato on a 5070, that it would be cool to dress this chrono a bit down.
We spoke, but Patrice did it, I have to say.
And AFAIK, he was the first one to try this daring combination.

I have to admit, when I saw a post on the interwebs a few months ago about someone wearing his 5960P with a NATO strap, I thought it was rather inspirational...
Unfortunately, I found that while the grey NATO strap does look quite on the grey 5960P, it feels very unbalanced on the wrist due to the sheer weight of the platinum casing. I suppose if one prefers wearing watches tight on their wrists it won't be a big issue, but I prefer to wear watches bit loose on my wrist, so the NATO combo sits rather floppy. So I had to try it for myself. I hope the original NATO'er considers imitation the highest form of flattery!

If it works, I think it works because...
It's interesting you say it "dresses it down" - I never though the 5960P was a dressy watch to begin with! 
My personal opinion is that with the grey dial and colorful sub dial, the grey 5960P is one of the more casual/sporty watches in Patek's lineup... which is why I think the NATO strap "works" in the first place. HOWEVER...

HOWEVER...If you Google image search for "nato strap patek" the first picture that shows up is one of a very classic looking Patek with roman numerals (5159 without retrograde date?) on a very flashy red, blue and white striped NATO and it just... somehow... works.

Just kidding of course, but it really changes the look of the watch - and not in a way that I personally would find pleasing.
On a plus side, you'll save a bundle on straps!

It feels cheap on the wrist. Maybe because it is!
Unfortunately I was unable to save a bundle on straps as I already caved into buying two additional straps... I wish I would have been able to, as I actually dig the NATO look quite a bit. But at the end of the day, if it doesn't feel right, then it's not right.
