. . . is the nuts when it comes to functional timing. It's a toss-up at this point, but I'm leaning towards the Striking 10th. I prefer the 40th Anniversary El Primero in every respect except the functional, but since I don't currently have a chrono, I'm sorely tempted to make a decision primarily based on utility rather than aesthetics . . . cordially, Art

Actually, I wouldn't do both even if I could financially, simply because I can justify having only one chrono - or none - in my possession at any one time.

It's a difficult choice, Damian . . . do I go with the one I'd look forward to wearing every day, or the one I'd want whenever I'm at the races?

. . . little point in having a sports/tool/utility watch for special occasions only, and that's precisely what the Striking 10th would be if it were in my collection - a watch for special occasions.

... the 40th Anniversary appealed to me more on the pictures, but I was a bit disappointed when I checked it on my wrist. The finish of the dial and hands had a few flaws, the movement finish was - typically for Zenith - a bit technical, but flawless; except one plate of the automatic winding mechanism, that had lots of particles on it.  I'd rather go vintage.

However, the Striking Tenth is a different league, and has  the bonus  of a very unique movement.

The 40th Anniversary resonated from its inception, Marcus. It exhibits almost every element that matters to me - a true manufacture movement, and an excellent one at that, appealing cushion case design with elements of angularity and curvature, overall dimensions in keeping with my slender wrist, and pleasing proportions. My collection has not had a rugged sports watch in some time, and the void was one I felt deeply. There were other watches under consideration, including Grand Seikos, Rolexes, Omegas, and Glashüttes, but this particular Zenith . . .

. . . matched them in every respect, and went an element better by offering an integral chronograph complication. Then came the Striking 10th . . .

. . . which simply did not hold my attention aesthetically like the 40th, but had one overwhelming advantage: I placed an order for the 40th Anniversary model several weeks ago, but then suffered nagging second thoughts, as the Striking 10th iteration of the El Primero represents an actually useful enhancement. After spending the better part of an hour examining one in detail, the order was changed to the limited edition of the Striking 10th shown above. After another week had passed, though, I came to the realization that the usefulness of the Striking 10th did not sufficiently compensate for the aesthetic qualities offered by the 40th Anniversary, and consequently changed the order again. I can only hope the patience of the sales representative wasn't overly taxed.

... but I would be more intrigued by the unique mechanism of the striking 10th. Just a matter of individual priorities ...

Congrats Art! I remember when we looked at it last year.

. . . I wouldn't have had the opportunity to consider the Striking 10th LE, so in a way, I'm glad I waited until now to commit.

Seems like only Saturday....

The striking 10th... But i must say that it was close and at one point i got so upset that i was thinking of leaving without or with both...

. . . which Purist should get a Striking 1/10th, your name would be the first on the list. A chrono with tenth of a second resolution is the most natural complication for an active racing enthusiast like yourself.

The Long Beach American Le Mans race will be in two weeks; I'll be there with my EP, wishing all the while to have made the opposite decision. If I followed racing more avidly and went to at least a few races every season, it would've been the Striking 1/10th on my wrist instead of the New Vintage.

an El Primero from the Charles Vermot Edition in blue dial, brilliant glide of the seconds hand, wears beautifully and has a surprisingly good power reserve.

This range is great in any version. Even the vintage 1969 you have displayed is an excellent retro choice.

I suggest you wait for the novelties coming at Basel world, there are some surprises in store!! then decide...

I would opt for my dream Zenith
although is not new
the legendary JFK

Regarding the original question, the answer is easy - both - hardly bears thinking about, really The Striking 10th is all business, a bit of a power watch, the New Vintage 1969 is a quirky connoisseur's watch - offbeat, highly individual. One simply cannot substitute for the other, see? (anyone in need of other rationalizations, contact me by PM)

Regarding the "Kennedy" (very nice watch in all of its versions by the way), could someone please tell me if there actually is a Kennedy link, or is that moniker an invention of the marketing department?

I’m planning to add this quaint essential chronograph as my very next watch purchase, however; still got a ways to go in terms of funding …hopefully by the end of this year.

are very tempting, it's great to see them return to their roots.  IMO the Striking 10 would be the way to go.

Trying to fondle a couple of models when I can get to an AD. I like the Striking 10 and the Vintage 1969 as shown in photos, but don't know how they will feel on the wrist.  The Split Second looks good too. Prefer a big date if Zenith makes one.

The 2011 models don't seem to smile at me so far.

Just helped my friend got his through my regular AD.  Waited for about a month for new stock to arrive and a few pieces did so lately.  Nice watch, clean and elegant.
