A few days ago while traveling, I visited the Pacific Bonsai collection in Federal Way, Washington state. I thought perhaps this would interest PuristS, so I have assembled some photos of the tree exhibits and their details.







The exhibit discussed a style of presentation that involves 3 elements, a tree, a hanging piece of art, and a detail piece.




Then they introduced a "modern equivalent" which in this case is using a custom-painted skateboard in lieu of the hanging art. Personally, I think they missed it by a mile, as skateboard art shown was anarchistic and violent, whereas bonsai have an eternal and calming influence. However, I am an old fart, so perhaps they are looking for youths with a wild streak AND long-term interest in cultivation.

This post is continuing my short series on the trees exhibited in the midst of a conifer forest in Washington. Almost all are situated outdoors in a fantastic setting:


I have been working on collating the signs that describe each tree, but it's quite tedious so I think I'll just start with the pictures. It was a cool, damp summer day (as one would expect in Seattle) with intermittent patches of sun peeking through the tree canopy above us.

The Bonsai gardens are next to 30 acres of Rhododendrons. These tropical plants do not grow in the desert where I live, but sadly they also do not blossom at the end of a hot summer. So I will just give you a taste of what it might be like in the fall, and you can imagine the springtime blossoms.

I was trying to use my spot focusing feature and had lots of fun while my wife and brother were yelling "Come on!"



































While taking a series of photos here it began to rain, so we headed back to the entrance.



Only 2 berries on a 10-foot high bush. Here's one.



I swear I saw some Hobbits in here ...

So much goes into keeping them in shape - I really respect people, who successfully keep them Definitely something I'd like to try when I retire!

I have a quasi bonsai at home as well. Compared to theses it is more quasi than bonsai... ;-) I have too little time to actually care about it. With so little soil - as in some of your pics - it can be a matter of hours until its gone!!

It's a very lovely presentation, both photographs and text.  I will spend more time looking through all parts of the visual exhibit...  more than one viewing is needed.

The history of the Trident Maple from Toichi Domoto, is very interesting... as is the history of the Domoto Brothers Nursery (1880s–1930s) which continued with a new nursery started by Kanetaro's son Toichi Domoto after the war.

Your presentation is like opening a window... thank you for sharing your visit to the Pacific Bonsai Museum... and ignore the pleadings of your wife and brother ; )
