The city wants to "upgrade the pier experience" and provide for socializing moments and family excitement and so forth, hence curves and loops and swoops. We shall see if those survive the engineering and/or budget. And I have rarely seen any kids out there, despite the concept below. Maybe with enough safety wire parents would be more comfortable with their kiddos running around on the pier.
Piers from the top
The fierce ocean off our local beach has finally destroyed the Ocean Beach pier. Due to the lack of sand under the pier, there are few opportunities to take the kind of photos Filip has demonstrated so nicely. I too have been captivated by piers, but more as figures in action photos... thanks Filip for the inspiration to dig these out.

The replacement plan
I believe it was used mostly for the last decade 90% by fishermen, and wandering tourists and street folks. Yellow is the original straight-ish pier.

The curves may spoil those linear photographs that I love... but then I may not be around when they finally get around to doing something about it!
