Has anyone read the "12 mistakes" article on Hodinkee?
Friends, point 12 is a worrying one. I'm amazed that Ben Clymer (the high priest of horology, bless his cotton socks) had to tell everyone that there is more to life than watches, and we shouldn't lose friends over our beloved hobby. I don't really know any other real watch guys, is this really an issue?

If I had an FP Journe for every friend I lost over an argument whether a particular watch Had been polished or re-dialled I'd have the same nicer of FPJ's as I do now - ZERO

I thought the same. The only watch obsessed people I have met live have been fellow Purists and they have all been very helpful and appreciative and quite the opposite of judgmental or at risk of being lost due to having different opinions

In saying that, I don't think Ben Clymer would say that for no reason. I think most people on this forums would agree, very bizarre! Although the Hodinkee following does seem to have a reputation for strong opinions etc (which can of course be good). Perhaps it's the water in New York! :P

Just guessing the author needed a 12th point. I only know people who are thrilled you have what you have.
Let's face it; a lot of articles are more site filling content driven than quality driven on a lot of commercial sites.
Hardly any real watch journalism out there. Whatever that may or should be. But most of the content on all those sites are advertorials.

Although, I think Hodinkee does keep the quality pretty high.
They do have a viewpoint.
But they are in bed with all the auction houses; they shill for Aurel Bacs; and they never review a watch they don't like. Additionally, they have gleefully driven up the prices of the "minor" vintage brands out there-the U.G.s; the Enicars; the Gallets; Bovet Frere. These watches cost way more in 2016 than they did back in 2014. I've stopped completely buying in this market-the watch I could buy 3 years ago for 15-1800 USD now has a floor above 3000.

Those brands you mentioned, like UG in particular. The increase in price would certainly have benefited a few people who were certainly owners of a few pieces. It's frustrating because there should be a lot more ethics in pricing. When did collecting something become an exercise in profit?

... The High Priest of Horology? Whenever I read his stuff I get a sense of arrogance that I do not experience here at The WatchProSite.
And to be sure, some of the very best people I have met are because of our shared mutual passion. Nobody I know has ever ended a friendship because they did not see eye-to-eye on a watch (or watches).
Politics? Not so much.

Some magazine declared him so a few years ago, an American one.
I think he's alright, seems a nice guy. I don't get the arrogance much, but maybe he's in some sort of strange fanatical/fundamentalist NYC watch crowd haha! That would explain his article, and his per owed arrogance.
