...first MY answer : this could surely be the first installment for my next Laurent Ferrier Double Spiral Tourbillon

Have to be a one watch backpacker next year. Might chuck my Zenith Daytona on a red and black G10 strap and leave the box and papers at home. What other choices do I have?

The Cartier is really nice

An ave £3k per watch, so:

1) JLC Memovox  - either with a classy black dial, or a funkier style 70's case.
2) Omega Speedmaster 125.
3) IWC Ingenieur 3521.
4) GP gyromatic hf (preferably no date) in SG.
5) Enicar Sherpa GMT / Traveler.

Other than swimming / diving I can't think of a location or pastime that 1 of these wouldn't suit.

The ones you mentioned have almost no horological value. If the idea is to definitely buy 5 I would suggest JLC as a watch for suit (Reverso 1931 or Master ultra thin), any mechanical grand seiko for casual purposes (Snowflake) or Rolex and 3 quartz watches (Citizen One could be one of them).
OR you can buy Lange Saxonia 37mm and some nice quartz watches like Citizen.

The three I mentioned are icons of horology, full of history, the Saxonia is just beginning its history

The Calatrava would definitely be my main pick, but I do have a soft spot for the Saxona. Lange 1 is a mighty good choice too, but I personally like the symmetry and simplicity of the Saxonia as an everyday timepiece. This is all hypothetical of course.

The Paul Newman is absurd, no logic or rational in the slightest. Clearly a very wealthy person advised incredibly badly by so called "professionals"....

By the way I thought that this Rolex would reach something like $30 mil.

The only real exception is the Omega. It has a wonderful caliber 1863.
I do not mean the the watches you mentioned are low quality. They are good robust watches, but that’s all.
The Paul Newman Rolex is more a symbol than a watch.

The first path is to respect hand-finished movements, cases etc. The second path is related to technical advancement.

I am almost sure that nowadays Rolex is the most robust and technically advanced watch. 3255 looks like a work of technical art. If I had to choose one watch it would definitely be a Rolex (or Lange, they are pretty reliable too).

At the same time almost all if not all Rolex watches are entirely produced by machines. The movements are not hand finished and covered by solid back. And the horological value of such watches is quite small. I don’t even mention Purists’ approach of ignoring silicon components.

Of course there are auctions that show us how valuable Rolex watches are but it is another story.

Long story short - in my opinion if you have serious money to spend on a watch - it should be at least hand finished.

Since the silicon escapement parts are a key difference between the standard Zenith Tipo 2 ("Cairelli reedition") chronograph and the PuristS' P15 edition, I would think that the distinguished circle of puristS assembled here is well aware of the advantages of this material. Otherwise, we would not have a forum dedicated to Ulysse Nardin, the pioneer of the silicon escapement.
Other than that, I would personally not include the Calatrave in the list of a definitive collection. The Calatrava is too much an entrance level Patek, and as such compromised in terms of finishing quality. If putting aside the money to sav e for a "real" Patek is not an option, I would rather decide an at least equally fine watch from a manufacturer without such a "big" name.
