What’s Next?
I think many of us are always considering what next to add to the collection. In fact, the constant searching is one of the most enjoyable aspects of collecting. I think it would be interesting to hear from people what pieces they think will be next for them to acquire, and why?
Personally, my interests have shifted recently to more modern, usable sport watches. Over the past few years I’ve found myself always reaching for the same set of “go to” watches when traveling or heading to my vacation place. And these have generally been what I would call “luxury sports watches” on steel or rubber bands. This means, for me, less of a focus on dress pieces and also vintage. (The crazy, crazy spike in vintage prices, especially Rolex, has made those less appealing to go after these days, at least for me).
So, now I have a short list of watches in my head that I have been thinking about. My preference is not to “buy just to buy”, but rather, to “let fate have a hand” if I come across one while traveling somewhere cool, or if there is some other meaningful opportunity.
The watches on my radar now include the PP 5164a (I am on two waitlists, and whether one arrives for me is up to fate ); the ceramic GMT LN (I have placed an order with an Italian dealer where I will be next summer, and again fate will play a hand if they can get one for me, or not); an AP diver (right place, right condition... so again fate may play a hand) and several others....
We will see what 2019 holds.

I let fate play with me. And I will add Luck, too...
I have such a long wish list that I have no problem letting fate play a bit. Now luck is another song, you know the story of the right watch which falls on the bad moment too well.
In the moderns, I would focus on the Duometres ( UTT, QL Enamel ) or on the Reverso, the latest Reverso Tribute Small Seconds Burgundy. A modern Panerai, such as the 372, 662 and or the 587.
Why not a Patek 5100G, too?
And of course, one or two modern Rolex.
As for vintage watches, I have a soft spot for Longines, Omega, JLC, Tudor, Rolex... Even if, for this last one, I have the same problem than you, but a Neo Vintage such as the GMT MASTER 16760 ( Fat Lady ) is still doable.
Then under the radar watches such as Lemania, Tissot ( World Time ), and so on...
Too many watches, way too many!

Interesting to see the Panerais on your list (surprised me a bit), which are so different from the Reverso. It is very true that the list can be endless because there is always something grabbing one’s eye after seeing daily posts here and elsewhere.
Panerai is an old love. A complicated one, but you know... Now I won't build a huge collection, one or two, most probably. [nt]

I get it. I have but one Panerai (a Zero) which I purchased in Florence some years back
I use it almost exclusively for its intended purpose. That is, it’s my go-to watch for boating and has spent a lot of time in the Mare Nostrum in the summers. I’m very happy to have it.
There are a few spots open in my vintage Omega collection . . .
. . . and still working on filling them as circumstances allow. A T17 tank, a 30T1, a jumbo (bumper or manual wind), an original Rail or Ranchero - all at the top of the list.
A few others, too, but none 'essential' . . . a '74 Speedy Pro or SM 120 would be welcome additions, but not 'make-or-break' propositions.
Done with just about everything else; wouldn't totally rule out a Dornblüth 04.0 or GO cal 42, but those desires have largely faded. It's pretty much Omega from here on out.

I'm happy with my three-piece collection
And I'm not lusting for anything other than a Grand Lange 1 Lumen, but the time for it will eventually come. That said, Baselworld is around the corner, maybe my next darling will be there. Who knows...
What next?
I'm expecting a slow year this year and my primary goal is to thin out rather than add. I've said that before but it's not happened and so let's see how that goes.
Like you, I do like to leave purchases to luck or randomness and so I'm always looking in strange and not so strange places to see what might pop up. Over the years I've had some great watches come to me that way including the Omega Snoppy I posted about a week or so ago.
Specifically I am still waiting to find a Tudor BB58 on the bracelet (a Purists edition would of course be most prized) and for a while now I've been trying to catch a Vianney Halter Classic (some near and not so near misses). My longest search however has been for a Day Date President, and that too has included some close calls (I let two blue Buckley dialed WG Presidents slip by in the last two years, one had bark centerlinks and bezel and so perhaps that wasn't too disappointing. And maybe three years ago I let a WG White Buckley dial with Chinese day/Date wheel slip). Maybe this year is the year for the President to be found!

Too much expensive mechanicals. A relatively inexpensive and reliable quartz can come in handy.
