Horological Meandering

That was a quite an exertion . . .

. . . on Labor Day, Fred!

smile

The subtext of your post, imho, is value.  Anyone given an unlimited budget can craft a watch that meets specified requirements, especially objective requirements such as accuracy and consistency.  Financial restraint makes that goal a bit more difficult.

;-)

To the best of my recollection, Ball re-emerged about a dozen years ago, with a marketing campaign targeted at quality-conscious consumers on a fairly tight budget.  Glad to learn they survived the crash of '08, and still hard at it.  I'll wander over to their website now to check out their current wares.

Lolling about on this holiday weekend,

Art

Dear Art, If you read all the way to the end it is YOU who exerted yourself! It took me the better part of last week to put this together, but out of the blue I decided to check accuracy,

e voila! I was excited. You are quite right in your assessment, of course: value. But a "valuable" perspective. Many thanks for responding, and have a fine day with...

. . . Cynar.  A liqueur based on artichoke?  But so it is . . .

I'll pour one later on and raise a glass to you, Dr.! Cynar, fresh-squeezed orange juice & soda. A delight! [nt]

A fine watch Sir, and a pleasure to read about it. I share the joy for an accurate watch and legibility, though artisjokes are not my favorites.... [nt]

always a pleasure to be exposed to watches out of the main stream...

I have heard about Ball, but never got such an enthusiastic personal perspective....thanks a lot, very informative and interesting, y

Hey, there, Izhik. Well, I suppose I wouldn't be so enthusiastic about many of their models: too large, too bold, too informal/casual. But this one… it's really a nice watch, and

I've noticed this phenomenon with other brands at the lower end of the spectrum—one model in particular will stand out. Take the Mido Commander, for instance. Not an expensive timepiece, but it has a large following. I'm humbled that you took the time to follow my "enthusiasm." I enjoy your posts immensely. All good thoughts, Fred

Some reaction to the Ball Report

I always loved the Ball "glow" as shown in their literature. But with watch (paid for) in hand in the dark in my living room, I was a bit disappointed. I couldn't light the whole room with it, as I had imagined (spurred on by salesmen and photos on the web).

Eventually I grew to love it anyway, and who wouldn't love a watch called NIGHT TRAIN!  I could in fact pick it out from 40 or so other glowing watches on the top shelf of my watch cabinet.  Some photos:

And with practice, after playing with lots of radioactive lume material,

learned to capture the glowing Ball tubes in all their glory. The colors of the different tubes are magical:

But I have a lot of fun watches, as some of you know,

and in an opportunistic moment I sold The Ball to my friend Moki, who also was charmed by the lume.

Hey, Mike… Your photos are so superior! So sharp. Many thanks for contributing.

I, too, was disappointed at first, having read things like "shines like a torch!" "lights up the room!" etc. But over time I've come to realize that this "quiet intensity" is not only all one needs, but in fact is really there when you need it. Really fun lume pics, too. Thanks for those, as well.

Great review Fred I enjoyed the read Tony [nt]

Ball Watches

 By: Pelican1960 : September 2nd, 2019-19:08
As the proud owner of a Ball watch for the past 15 years, I can relate to most of the points you have made in your post. I can relate to the accuracy of Ball Chronometers and their legibility is outstanding. After 15 years, mine is starting to fade, but it can still be read in the dark. It’s a great everyday watch to wear to work and other occasions.
My only complaint is that the movement (ETA 2836-2) has never been an efficient winder, even after two services over 15 years. The 38 hour power reserve is really too small for an automatic movement. Other than that, I wear the watch proudly and enjoy it.
Your post was most informative.
Take care!
