Horological Meandering

When I first joined, I had said I could not afford expensive watches I still can't. But last week I picked up my third WristWatch Annual Buyers Guide I already have the 2008 & 2009 editions. So like most I tend to go though the Book first before I read about the companies LOL. I don't know how you guy's manage to buy expensive watches when there's so many to choose from??? I've always told my self if I were to ever win the lottery I would go nuts deciding which expensive watch to buy? I understand it really comes down to taste and I guess price rather then styling heck if someone gave me a Leopard Rolex Daytona LOL I would keep it because well it's a Rolex & if worse comes to worse I can always resell it.

first you need the $ but after you sort out how much you are willing to spend it can be $100 or $10k + then just go with your heart as they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder yes ofcourse it must be within your budget too i dont have loads of cash either but once the addiction takes over everything becomes a blur   

You've got to put the watch on. Picking a watch from a picture is only the first step. Price is a factor with most people, but if you are going to be satisfied with your purchase in the long term, you must see how the watch looks on your wrist.

Example: One of my work colleagues was given a gold Rolex day/date by his father-in-law (lucky guy!). It is an older watch in beautiful condition and quite valuable, but it looks terrible on him because it is a large and heavy watch and he has a very slender wrist.  It looks out of place. So make sure you try the watch on.

...by aesthetics, then I consider other factors like the movement, brand, how the potential purchase fits into my current collection, and of course price.

If I had to buy just one watch, I'm sure I would go crazy trying to decide which is the single best one for me. Since my general expectation is to own more than one, however, it becomes easier because I am only trying to decide whether I like it a lot and consider it worth the money. Also, since I will have more than one watch I don't have to insist on tremendous versatility: I can buy a diver's watch, for example, secure in the knowledge that I have a different watch to wear with a suit.

For me, it's usually how it looks and feels on the wrist, then it would come down to the brand and price. It has to be something that has some sort of a history behind it, and one that is fascinating and interesting to me.

That gives you M, and that stands for Movado.  For FeBruary I'm thinking a nice Audemars will do the trick.

Then we get tons of others opinions, change our minds 2 million times, rationalize, dream, save, rationalize more. Finally to stop the pain we get something praying it is the Holly Grail, and if after hours, days, or months later it turns out not to be, we start the whole process over again.

Fortunately I have been pretty pain free these last few years. It wasn't cheap, but I can say I have found the Holy Grail for now.

then it has to look good on me, unfortunately, most of watches don't (especially yellow/rose gold and dress watches.)

Third, I can afford it.

Once again, unfortunately, not that many of them I can afford, so I have to be careful of what I purchase each time as I may not have money for another one until next year.
