Horological Meandering

I had bought an NOS Unitas 6498 movement a few years ago. Have been looking for a suitable home for it since. This combination ticks almost all the right boxes.


I wanted this watch to be as small as possible. At 41mm dia. without crown and 12mm thick I don't think one can make a smaller watch with this movement. There is a little more than 2mm of case all round.


I love sub seconds & blue hands (even though these are painted).


Here's the movement. Undecorated, but a workhorse.

Possibly the only grouse I have with this watch is the cluttered subdial.

The watch looks really slick, if dial is subject to customization I agree the digits could be spared or perhaps reduced to indices...

certainly fills the case..!

I didn't really notice the cluttered subdial until you said about it so not a big issue....the only thing I find a bit odd is the writing on the display back "All Stainless Steel Water Resistant" which doesn't mean much, it would have been nice to have your name and date it was made or something personal to make it more special to you.

I got the case dial & hands from Otto Frei (hope it is all right to mention the name). Everything was straightforward except that the second hand needed to be trimmed a bit.

I got the NOS movement a few years ago from ebay. The barrel bridge had to be filed a bit around the case screws, since it was more conducive for mounting in a pocket watch.

I actually got a couple of sets of cases and new ETA 6498-1 movements for another project. The dial and hands were bought just to give this older movement a home.

As I mentioned before I am VERY pleased with this one!

I fully agree with your obsevation about the second hand part.  Could do w/o all the numbers.  But still very classy.

I agree with you about the sub-dial but it's a small complaint to the overall package.  While this watch might be a solid companion, I must admit to liking your skeleton model even more.  All the best!

You are rightly proud of this one. The wrist shot shows that the proportions are perfect for your wrist. I love how the Unitas movement fills the case - a peeve with many watches from major manufactures. The dial is congruent with the pleasant engraved patterns, raised Breguet Arabic's and the blued leaf hands. Yes, I agree about the busy sub-seconds dial, but it doesn't distract from the overall look which is excellent.

AndrewD, I too like the fact that the movement fills up the case. This case- movement combination does not need a movement ring.

Perhaps, one day, I will decorate this movement. Then the rear view will be a bit easier on the eyes

Thanks for sharing this with us.  I'm a sucker for time only watches with small seconds registers, and this one works quite well for me.  I can't decide which hands I prefer - I actually think both work quite well.
