Just happened to me. Ready to pull the trigger on AP Royal Oak Offshore. Tried on the watch many times in the store while drinking gallons of complimentary tea/coffee from the AD but somehow ended up purchasing a Rolex Daytona SS black dial....
I guess for all my horologically snobby forum talk, my tastes actually run to the pedestrian and predictable and all my watch erudition just led to the same watch as any old joe banker/management consultant/physician/dentist

And have gone in planning to buy, but didn't.
And went intending to buy nothing, but did. And met a friend who was planning to buy a watch, and bought one off his wrist while walking through the parking lot.

There's nothing pedestrian and predictable about the SS Daytona Bk dial. Beside "any old joe banker/management consultant/physician/dentist" ... the watch is spot on Hiphop Artist/Blues Guitarist/Racing Legend/Rock Star/Supermodel/Hot Actress/Purist(now these are the cool people

To answer your question yes it happen to me. Went in to buy a daytona but end up a gold quartz watch instead ... (a safe queen that never worn once)

It pays to have a 24hr cooling off period...
I actually had a 1 month cooling off period when I bought my royal oak!
But of course, you would have to make a deposit so that's bad enough in committing to the deal.

Went to buy the IWC Ingeneiur and walked out with a Rolex Explorer. You are correct that a lot of forum knowledge goes out of the window when you are in the store. Buti am very happy with the buy.

it happened to me just recently in Taiwan..
In the plane and before boarding, i was thinking of getting the Rolex Air King. Very excited, tried many Air King models, and unfortunately, the older versions are more wearable for me in design and simpler dials. And the size of 34mm, actually was too small for my not so large wrist. So i ended up with the Radiomir instead. Radiomir had been on my mind for a while too. I am so confused, haha..
