Horological Meandering

Several Swiss papers just published the news that Citizen Watch of Japan has acquired La Chaux-de-Fonds based Prothor, owner of movement specialist La Joux-Perret (formerly Jaquet), component maker Prototec as well as the brand Arnold & Son. Interesting news!

As I recall the base Hublot Big Bang, the PSM Tourbillon, Panerai's rattrapante, and a bunch of "They couldn't have made a tourbillon on their own" brands (LV, Maurice Lacroix, Chanel, etc).

A lot of brands use La Joux-Perret, which is best known for their work with the Valjoux 7750 (flyback, rattrapante, tourbillon etc).

I wonder if this will work though. Seiko bought high-end Swiss brand Jean Lassale in the 80s when ultra-slim watches were all the rage and that didn't go anywhere. But maybe times have changed.

I really eager to see what the asian company will bring to the table. If they stuck to the old way then is boring. Something like the Credor or Chronomaster will be interesting to see with this new facility.

But yes, the main point was definitely LJP. Still the main point of the difficulty of managing a company in a very insular industry, from halfway across the world remains.

Well, hope that their intention is to drive market innovation and not simply help other repackage firms to own their so call "complicated in-house movement" and drive prices northward... Cheers.
