Horological Meandering

You did notice the VC, right?

I just love wearing that piece!  Functional and really beautifully made.

Thanks for the shoe tip -- those do look really tasty...

Best,

Gary

Great to read you, Gary!

I am going to make things difficult for you......Pplater went ballistically mental and muscle, and mutate into Incredible Hulk after consuming some questionable TWG nothing-to-do-with 1837 tea...storming into your home and threatening to destroy your precious watch collection, innocently displayed on your dress table. You barely have time to escape with two watches....and the question is WHICH TWO??

Comically,

Horo

I feel the same about you!

It has been a delight getting to know you, and I am looking forward to many happy years of association ahead.

As for your question, a simple but perhaps unexpected answer:

1. The Master Ultra Thin given to me by my Wife

2. The antique pocket watch worn by my Grandfather

Beyond those, the PSM Fighting Time is of course unique so could not be replaced exactly, and my Observatoire has "custom" features that are unique to it, so I'd try to distract the Hulk/watch fanatic long enough to spirit those away.  Then the rare pieces -- Simplicity and Antiqua.  Somewhere in there, the first watch I ever bought for myself, a Bucherer with a blue dial.... and on and on...

Best,

Gary

Great Gentleman Purist!

Thanks Andrew for the Purist-of-the-week with Gary! Thanks Gary for opening your door to us.

Couldn't agree more with your last point! That should be exactly how every watch collector approach this hobby. With online access, information is too readily available and it's too easy to find out about the latest and greatest. I agree just because everybody rave about a certain piece, we shouldn't play follow the herd, but to actually follow our heart!

I'm very glad that Voutilainen is still your number one choice Gary! And this is after owning other legendary pieces such as the Simplicity and Antigua. It really says a lot about Kari's work compared to his peers, especially coming from an outstanding collector like yourself.

Thank you Gary for being part of this wonderful community. Your contribution certainly made this place more interesting and more fun and we all look forward to following you with your watch journey!

Thanks for your thoughtful comments, Sidney!

As always, made me think!

I did pick the KV, but some others were pretty close behind!  I have been very fortunate to have the opportunity to meet the people and enjoy the watches. And, as you say, to discover my own preferences!

Best,

Gary

The pic. of the Doberman would make any potential intruder think twice. Good call IMO smile

Thanks for a wonderful and enjoyable read. I see many areas where our interests coincide.

Hoping to cross paths one of these days. smile

I hope to meet you as well!

In person meetings with PuristS have always exceeded my expectations.

As for safekeeping, between the bank safe deposit box, the gate, the alarm system, the Doberman, and shall we say other discouraging devices, we do our best to make ourselves quite unrewarding as a potential visiting spot for bad guys...

Best,

Gary

Ps -- I forgot the armored safe smile

Fantastic Interview and Congrats Gary :-)

As suspected...

...after reading your POTW interview, you remain one of the most interesting PuristS around, Gary!  I'm glad I've gotten to know you a bit through this site, and meet you in person on a few occasions now.  I think you are one of the most charitable PuristS, when it comes to sharing (whether via written posts or at GTGs) your spectacular collection and thoughts on the various pieces in it.  I know many people, including myself, will likely never have the ability to obtain grail watches like an Observatoire, so being able to handle watches like this that are owned by generous friends like yourself, gives one a lot of perspective on the hobby.

Keep doing what you're doing, Gary!  You are certainly appreciated by a legion of PuristS all around the globe.

Cheers,
Daos

Thanks for both the kind words and photo, Daos!

I will look forward to meeting many times again in the future.

I can smell that Double Delight from here!  Even though the fragrant rises tend to be disease prone, I do love them.

Thanks again,

Gary

Totally forgot! This picture is for you, Gary!

Double Delight rose!  Photographed by yours truly at the International Rose Test Garden in Portland, Oregon recently.  smile
