Some of us grew up with smaller watches
and could be too stubborn to change! For my "era" a pocket watch was 44mm and a wristwatch was 31-36mm. Here are some photos through the years.
I have some of my favorites because they fit my slender wrist/budget. Sometimes not following the crowd opens opportunities we never thought possible.

. . . and heirloom Seiko 5 @ 36 mm.
Most of my vintage collection is in the 33 - 36 mm range; the modern pieces, slightly larger. One observation to add: a rectangular or shaped case tends to wear comparably to a nominally smaller round form. My G O Karrees and GS 44 wear just as comfortably as these vintage pieces.

This is one of my smallest...
...although I don't wear it often.
I have others that are even a bit smaller, obviously all vintage--a 1965 Hamilton Electric Polaris 2 in WG as well as a 28mm square Universal, also in WG. I don't think I've worn either of them more than a couple times over the years but I like them for what they are.
Most of my watches are on the small side by today's standards although at 44mm the Navitimer isn't exactly small. It's not that large watches don't fit me well, at 6' 1" and 220 pounds large watches aren't a problem. It's just a matter of taste, which is why so many on my watches are vintage. Not so easy today to find a nice new watch in the 35-38mm range...at least not ones I like.
