But on a classic, traditional looking watch like this my choice would be the white dial.

Harder choice for me would be between the white or the rose gold case....

By now, I think you know which would be my choice ;-) This is a wonderful photo essay, and it does justice to the nuance of the grained texture of the dial.

For all the effort JLC put into the press photos, there's a sterility to them that your warm imagery overcomes.  Not only have you done justice to the dial and the fashion in which it scatters light, but the nuance of the white gold case finish is expressed to a degree I have not experienced in other images released thus far.

While I've seen, handled, and worn the Jubile and respect it greatly, it lacks the warmth - the exuberant soul - of this blue variant. 90 percent of the change is afforded by the blue grained dial, but the subtle refinements you mention effect the final ten percent of the transformation. To my eye and heart, that's a big ten percent, and it makes the MGT TCQP feel like a new watch rather than a variant.

What was your impression of the finish on the movement? In this regard, my expectations are realistic given that JLC tends to favor functional finish (i.e., immaculate wheel teeth meshing surfaces, pinion leaves, metal-on-metal interfaces) rather than aesthetic opulence on its automatic complications. Is it appropriate to say this caliber 985 was finished to the same standard as, for example, the old Master Tourbillon? That was my impression of the Jubile.

Last I heard, the official release of the piece isn't scheduled until some time late in the fourth quarter, likely December. Was there any more detail in that regard?

Yes, it seems that JLC favors a functional " finish ", which I'd call decoration, rather than finish.

In the vein of the Master Tourbillon, indeed, while I would have expected something more from a piece of that price.

As for a new Watch compared to a variant, well, we can endlessly discuss that. For me, a new Watch is at least a new movement, a new case, and a new dial.

Here, you have some différences in the dial, but is this enough to call it a new Watch? Not in my opinion.

Now, is this one an attractive variant? Yes, definitely, since the dial case combination is eye catching.

As for the Schedule on this Watch, I heard next fall.

Indeed, I'm very fond of this watch, and my hope is to see it (and wear it) in the metal before making a decision. While I was fortunate to see virtually all of JLC's SIHH debutantes in Miami about a month ago, the TCQP Blue wasn't among them. But I do know that it's making the rounds at the worldwide factory boutiques, and I look forward to the Blue's visit to Miami. Then I can make the final call.

Regarding the definition of a new watch, your position is the logical one - the correct one - and grounded in substance. I believe mine is more a function of emotion. To be sure, the new TCQP Blue is an evolution of the Jubile, albeit with a very different personality. In the realm of vintage, especially vintage Rolex, this kind of cosmetic and romantic distinction generally creates large disparities in collector demand and regard for models. But it's true that a transformed dial does not amount to a truly new timepiece. My mind acknowledges this truth, but my heart is a stubborn and irrational fellow...

Words, I can manage... I cannot hope to match your photography!

But when I finally get my hands on this watch, I'll be certain to recover this thread to post follow-up photos and additional impressions. Hopefully, I'll have chance to take a few shots of the watch on the wrist.

While I'm not generally a fan of tourbillon watches with "open worked" display dials (and l adore the Reverso Platinum #2 for this reason), the open dial within a dark blue surround seems to mute the visual signature of the opening from a few paces. It's not much more discreet, but there is a notable reduction in contrast between the opening and the dial's base color. To my eye, the silver dial Jubile reads as a tourbillon from across the room due to the contrast with the escapement's hollowed space, but this TCQP Blue is more of an "arm's length" showcase for its signature refinement.

And it's not just this model, either. JLC's complications have been saddled with wacky names for a while now. Add limited edition status, and it can get out of control.

The blue dial is really cool, artistic and very well balanced considering all that is going on with this watch. Bravo.

For a good reason... The dial is matte. It will not be harsh in the sun. 

I like it if it wasn't for the pebble dash/ crèpit finish of the dial. Imho too coarse a finish for such a fine watch.

I would have loved a more decorated movement. I wonder if a manual winding movement would not have been a better choice, to say all...

It is a nice offer from JLC but however, I must say I have mixed feelings concerning this watch and guess I can't decide until I see it in the metal (I only saw last year's white dial version).

I imagine the dial looks great in blue, JLC has nice dial textures and I like the overall layout of this dial.

It is a good thing to make something special for the MP disk too.

But there are several elements I don't like that much: the windows in the hands, the"2014" divided in 2 and especially the movement's decoration on the back side as I think such a watch deserves much more than a simple and plain surface. The Duometre's mainplate decoration seems so much more appealing to me.

I'll go and have another look at it.

I should say I like the artistry of the piece.  I wonder whether it is too "flashy" and seeing it live I am sure is necessary. 

A question on the relief engraving on the rotor of the gold medal brought back by Jaeger-LeCoultre from the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1889.  What did they win the medal for?  Time keeping? A specific watch?  Any details?
