Gentlemen

I am a longtime lurker and occasional poster at the Purists and over the years have owned /collected and sold on a number of watches but never a JLC ( I know, I know...I'm a fool ;-) ), but I have always had an appreciation for the brand.

Well I think its about time. I am caught between two models, the Amvox 1 in stainless steel and the Master Compressor Geographic . I know that the two watches are different but I would like to hear your opinions and comparisons on them. Also is  the Amvox 1 waterproof and if so to which depth?, is the alarm movement robust ( I wont be doing anything more than a some traveling / beach / swimming / and light hiking ) . Does the rubber strap available for the Geographic fit the Amvox?..what do you think?.

Finally any photos / wrist shots of the two would be greatly appreciated.

I prefer the Geo bcs the mvt is so amazing. OK, the 918 is cool, too, and the AmVox1 has it's own history. But the
Geo is a worldtimer unlike any other - outside of JLC. The AmVox is 50 meters, and I wouldn't swim with it, whereas the Geo Compressor is conservatiely 100 meters. I would do ALMOST anything in it.

The other thing to consider is WHERE you want to wear it - or, more appropriately, be seen in it. The AmVox is great for office/dress, whereas the Geo is what I like to call a "business beater" (you can wear it for office wear, but it can go anywhere - including a pool, the ocean, etc. I will say that the Geo's mvt, in my opinion, is more hardy, so it can take more of what you dish out.

I don't know if this just made it harder, but I would consider point #2 more than #1.

If you want to travel ,the problem is that both are good...

The Amvox I because of its alarm.

The Master Geo because of its Worlld time...

But no one of these watches are made to swim with, so be careful...

If you really want to swim with a JLC, go on the Master Compressor diving, it's the ideal watch for that...

Between the 2 you quoted, I'd personnaly go on the Amvox I, because of its esthetic, an hommage to the Polaris.

Then it may be your watch!!!

With this one, you will be able to swim with, as it is Water Resistant to 200m.

But the pola has a plexy glass, so beware of the hairlines!

...that you wouldn't even swim in a swimming pool with a Master Compressor Geo? I always thought that the compression keys are specifically designed to make the watch water resistant. When I had my first Compressor Geo on a bracelet I used to swim in a pool all the time with no problems. I never went into the ocean though.........

No, with the Master Compressor Geo, of course you can swim with!

Contrary to Nicolas, I prefer Geo, especially for travelling purposes. Being an owner of the Geo for almost four years, I have always been fascineted with its accuracy and reliability.  For swimming, I never tried it (neither did I any of my watches because any weight on my wrist disturbs me when I swim). But honestly speaking, I am more fascinated with my wife's classical discontinued Master Geocraphic, especially with the operation of its movement. I would even consider to trade my Compressor if I knew I would find an unused discontinued version with a hinged case back.

But as Polaris is concerned, I'm totaly with Nicolas. Tribute to Polaris is the watch to fascinate with; in all terms. I'm desperately waiting for the SS version and hoping to have the chance to get one.

So James, welcome to the world of JLC. Once you step in, it's almost impossible to get out. Isn't it the case Nicolas?

To each his own and favourites, of course...

A Geo or An Amvox I, you can't go wrong, of course, with each of these ones.

I confirm, once oyu get the JLC virus, ithe cure is difficult to find.

" Dive " into the Vintage JLC watches, and you 'll understand the modern production...

Go to the Manufacture, and you will feel what is important for JLC, what make this Brand so appealing.

But , typically , I am still no closer to making the decision.lol.

I think the new Polaris is fantastic, however when I popped into the JLC boutique here in London, Bond street, they informed me that the watch was completely sold out on pre orders and JLC had taken orders for the entire run during the watch fair this year.So i guess there will be no chance of getting one soon unless I go to one of the flippers who no doubt be listing them above retail the minute they receive them. Oh well, such is life,

Just go back to the Jaeger-LeCoultre boutique. Try both pieces, one on each wrist and... buy them both! Problem solved
