I also am reaching a similar point in my collecting life, it will be hard to part with some watches and very easy to part with others, but as our tastes mature
our pallette craves more refined and complicated tastes. Bravo.

My time has been tight for the last few days, tomorrow I will try and give you a proper response to this.

It's an interesting question and one that has made me pause and ask myself if I do have a plan or a goal.

I'm not sure that I do in such a precise sense, say in the way some collectors are compleatists and want one
example of every particular style of watch.

Rather, I guess, I think in terms of themes and fascinations and I find this is a more organic way to collect as they intersect in
new and interesting ways. The more I learn, the more I realise how little I know, the more I want to know more.

OK. To more specifics. I began my collecting life with vintage Breitlings, at first i couldn't put my finger on why I was attracted to
them, but only later did I realise it was because of their clean lines, their wearability and their broad sense of design. They were a
mid-level manufacturer who created what is arguably one the of the five most instantly iconic watches of the Sixties in the Navitimer,
but I was not drawn to them so much as to the simplicity and balance of the co-pilots and the uniqueness of their divers. They also appealed
to me because they were an "undiscovered country", there was and still is much to uncover on the histroy of this brand and how they fit into
the histroy of watch making through the twentieth century.

From this I learnt of the term "tool watch" and this is perhaps the DNA that runs through my collection. I am fascinated by watches
that were created for a technical purpose and that were involved in the history of innovation and events that have shaped the passing era.
A period of time in which technology and world events were exciting and dramatic; two world wars, the birth of aviation, the birth of diving, a series
of conquests from everest to space. Watches were integral to many of these events and watches were created and the technology of watches were
pushed to meet the requirements of those explorers. Those watches fascinate me.

This gives me a large umbrella under which to collect many types of watches, from military chronographs, to Borgel cases, to early aviation watches and divers.
I have a basic rule which is that I must feel the watch is wearable and I am personally drawn to the larger watches. I have a desire to have examples of watches
that were the tools of their era, so I have several watches that date to the birth of watches from the mid- 1910's and have examples of watches dating from almost
every decade until the 1970's.

Now why I pick one watch for that period over another is perhaps an even longer conversation, but I am lucky in the sense that I have access to a lot of other collectors and dealers
and I love the thrill of being shown something I have not seen before and feel the heart skip a beat.

My next collecting theme is going to be to collect watches of different brands who all share the same dial manufacturer.

I especially agree with you about the:

Your approach to have a great diversity in you collection – I would love to have that too.

 

But I have come to realize that my financial situation won’t allow that…

 

So, I focus on one brand, one complication!

 

With time, if I am lucky – I might move on to the next complication…

 

And if I am really lucky – next brand!

Now, that is a crazy goal.

Knowing that the Vintage Rlex had at least 4 different dial manufacturers, I would be curious to see how you would proceed...

BUT, I already found some coincidences between some Vintage Watches, as, for example, the JLC DSA and the Omega SM 300.

and partly in seriousness. I think this would be a difficult undertaking, but it seems to me that we know so much about movements and yet
so little about early dial making.

I certainly haven't found much information, but there was clearly a series of superlative dial makers who supplied dials to many different brands.
The ones that excite me would be Stern, Fluckiger and Cie, Singer and Bayer.

I'd love to know more about these makers and see the different dials they made.

But tell me what secrets have you discovered about JLC and Omega?

As for the JLC Deep Sea Alarm and the Omega SM 300, I will tell you one day, if you're a nice boy.

Interesting thema, Eitan... You can start with the Type XX... Mathey Tissot / Breguet, for example.

Thanks for posting this.  It made me feel a little better about what I have been doing this past year and continue to do now.  I just let one go that was very, very difficult for me -- but in the name of making way for a new watch that I think will suit me better long-term.   

The Deep Sea pair is stunning, and you have a very important and interesting theme you are collecting.  Thanks for sharing your deaccession strategies with us.

I must say that you had one of the hell impressive collection, with some very rare and desirable JLC timepieces. At least what counts is that you enjoyed plainly and fully them when you had them. Your deepsea watches are very nice and desirable. I am pretty sure, there will be other nice and rare JLC watches for you down the road.

my JLC collection is still small compared with yours and other folks here... fortunately i am not reaching at the stage to give up some of them yet.

in fact, i have recently started to trim down my other watch collection in order to consolidate my JLC collection, at the same to pool fund for up grade my collection

among all your loved, Master HomeTime is my first JLC, i for sure would not give her up to others, it is such beautiful watch with elegance and friendly functionality.

I think we are a few around going through the same process, especially once you fall into the vintage trap!...It is also about balancing out passion and reason, and of course some financial reasoning behind it.  it is always painful to let go a watch you liked and most probably still like but if it is to get the one that really talks to your heart, then that's a right reason if not good!...

Be sure that with this pair of DSA you have a very unique duo that not many around the world have and that require much more than just financial power to get!...I hope you didn't have to sell all of these to get the two though!...Anyway, I think an original is always better than a new, tribute or re edition watch!

I am going after something as well so have a few watches out there for sale!...
