An interesting idea : what is big, what is small ?
Is it really only the absolute diameter - naahh, there is likeley more to that and I'll try to explain my point,
maybe a bit naive, but I guess you will quickly realize what is meant..
1/ the limitation in my case is, that all I have (in size "small") are watches with 34 mm, none with real 32 or even less, so I may be the wrong person to ask.
Nevertheless, clearly I have watches which APPEAR smaller to me, when I put them on.
But they might look different on somebody's different wrist, an observation most of us would agree with.
2/ Now, there is the absolute diameter, for the case, ie edge to edge, without the crown; then we have the inner diameter,
which is on one hand a function of the bezel thickness, and on the other is influenced by the shape of the glass or plexi.
- we all know, that doming leads to distorsions, and changes the perception, doesn't it ? Also a dome will be different than
let's say, a chimney- like glass..
Therefore the ratio between outer diameter (1) and inner (2) will/ may vary and have an influence; so will the distance on how much space is left before the numbers on the dial start, and maybe if the dial is monocolor or 2-tone, whether it will be light ( eg silver) or black.
3/ moreover there is an additional factor which influences the way we perceive size, and that is the wearer's wrist, in absolute terms, but also in relative ways, watch diameter vs wrist diameter, strong wrist vs lean, muscular vs skinny etc, etc.
4/ Finlly the human eye is good in estimating RELATIVE sizes but does pretty poorly if a) distracted by surrounding factors
and/ or b) if it has to assess absolute size or width.
So in my opinion, there is a bit more, that meets our senses,
and the truth is often in the eye of the beholder...
Hope my dwellings were not to boring, just 2-cents and
some food for thought,
Best, hs
PS:
- Will come back shortly to try to underline the case and also share some of my smaller pieces,
Some because I am someone with a small wrist, and actually like smaller diameters
