Dear all,
I recently received a Memovox as a gift from my wife's grandmother. It was an unexpected and meaningful surprise. It had previously belonged to my wife's grandfather. I love the watch. It just finished an overhaul and runs great. In time, I look forward to giving it to my children!
I just had a new JLC strap added, which I think makes for a very nice contrast and works well with the silvery dial.
I apologize - this is my first JLC, and I know very little about this model. If anyone has any information about the watch, I would be most appreciative. For instance, does anyone know the purpose of the lump on the caseback? Sorry for the neophyte question. Thanks in advance.
Please enjoy the pictures.

Very nice E 855. A pleasure to wlecome such a specimen in such a great condition.
The plot on the case back is usual on a JLC Alarm Watch.
Looking forxard to read more from you,
All the best.
Nicolas
This Memovox is a reference E853. First automatic memovox (movement calibre 815). Introduced in 1957. Two years later, they added the date feature and the watch became reference E855 ('calendar alarm automatic' as they would describe it) and the movement calibre 825.
The addition of the date was considered a significant improvement, therefore the production of the no date memovox 853 became relatively scarce. Therefore today an E853 is less common than the emblematic E855. However, as it is a vintage watch that you might not were frequently, the lack of a date feature has its advantages (no date to set !).
Yours is in truly great shape, and whoever took care of servicing it didn't do any damage, which is good.
The only thing not original on this watch: the crowns have been replaced by non origial ones, which are much bigger / thicker than the correct ones. But that isn't a really big issue.
Also, it appears that the buckle you have on this strap is also original to the watch (although it doesn't bear any special logo or markings, this is the correct model). So in any event when you change the strap, make sure to keep it as they are hard to come by.
The "nub" on the back is the pin that the alarm hammer hits to make the noice...!
