The Origin of the Name “Royal Oak”
For your interest and reference
I believe there is profound meaning in understanding the story behind this name.
The name does not simply mean “a noble oak tree.” Rather, it is rooted in a real historical episode about surviving against all odds and escaping certain death through a miracle.
The Story of the Royal Oak
The setting is England in September 1651, during the turbulent period of the English Civil War.
1. A Desperate Escape
The young King Charles II suffered a crushing defeat at the Battle of Worcester against the Parliamentary forces led by Oliver Cromwell.
With enemies hunting him down, the king became a fugitive and was forced to flee for his life, slipping through an extensive network of pursuers.
2. Refuge in an Oak Tree
As his pursuers closed in, Charles escaped into the woods surrounding Boscobel House.
There he found a large English oak tree, climbed into its dense branches, and concealed himself among the leaves.
3. A Miraculous Survival
The soldiers searching for him passed directly beneath the tree.
By sheer fortune, none of them looked up.
As a result, Charles survived what seemed certain death. He later escaped to France, lived in exile for several years, and eventually returned to London during the Restoration, reclaiming the throne as King of England.
From that day onward, the tree became known as the Royal Oak—the oak tree that saved a king.
It came to symbolize survival, protection, resilience, and triumph over adversity, and has remained an enduring symbol in British history.
The Connection to the Royal Oak Watch
This historical story is also deeply connected to the design of the watch itself.
Royal Oak Naval Warships
To commemorate the legend, several ships of the Royal Navy were given the name Royal Oak.
The Porthole-Inspired Design
In 1972, legendary watch designer Gérald Genta created the Royal Oak for Audemars Piguet.
Inspired by the portholes of naval warships, he designed the now-famous octagonal bezel secured by eight visible screws.
In other words, behind the Royal Oak watch lies not only the image of a warship, but an even deeper story:
the story of a king who rose again from the brink of destruction.
The Royal Oak therefore represents more than luxury or prestige.
It embodies the idea of:
falling into a seemingly hopeless situation, surviving against all odds, and returning stronger than before.
Almost like a phoenix rising from the ashes.
That, to me, is the true spirit of the Royal Oak.
