Audemars Piguet

is it about the dial, or the complication that i see now ,the very possitive reactions about the Millenary?
I have to admit, the ones now shown on SIHH are stunning, and even when i thought the maserati line was okay, i would not have bought one myself.
The reason why i ask, is that we see so little of them around, and they are already for some years for sale.
Would love to hear your opinion about it.

i have only seen about 5 millenary watches, and only one of which was on some one's wrist!

i think that AP is starting to care a little more about their other watches, and theyre doing a wonderful job at it.

personally, i was not really fond of the millenary line, but these new ones are wonderful to look at... size is still an issue though, too big for me

It may well be that it takes time for a new line to permeate the consciousness of collectors. Or it may be a fashion shift away from round watches (are we seeing other shapes becoming more popular?), or it could be, as you suggest, that AP are putting more effort into designing new pieces in this range, or advertising them more widely.

Some of the most collectible vintage pieces of today where not popular when they were first released, either because of size, or shape or design. Didn't the Royal Oak start off this way as well?

I was one who didn't take much notice of the Millenary pieces until I strapped one on my wrist a couple of years ago and was impressed with the 'fit'. Don't dismiss the size unless you have tried one.

Let's hope the trend with the Millenary line continues.

it really uses the unique design features of the Millenary and its ovoid shape, and gives us watch geeks what we want - techno satisfaction with bridges, plates, and whirly thingamabobbies (in this case, the balance, but executed in a way that is not contrived and exploitive like the "cut a hole in the dial to show the escapement and trick the newbies and innocents into thinking it is a tourbillon" efforts of other brands...)

It also gives the fashionistas what floats their boat - something new, fresh, and allows them to "get in the game" of techno-chic.

All around, a winner for everyone, most of all AP.

The reality is that the Millenary line has not tempted AP collectors or other watch enthusiasts who might walk into a store and want to look for a new watch.  The Maserati Dual Time hooked me when it was introduced, but the dial is still rather polarizing.  The other current "affordable" designs are very contemporary.  The combination of roman numerals and arabics, varying sizes and unusual color schemes... I have not been lured at all, and I adore the case.  Most of us, I think, all agree that the high end complications - Cabinet 5, Deadbeat Seconds, Carbon One, MC12, new titanium Minute Repeater - are amongst APs most astounding creations.  Aesthetically and horologically.  But the pricepoint is far out of reach for many.

The 4101 now offers that "high end complicated look" in a steel case and in a price range most of us AP guys are more accustomed to.  So it is a viable option to a Royal Oak or an Offshore for existing AP fans, and a striking design that will demand the attention of a watch buyer should one ever be found in a dealer's case.

Generally speaking, I do believe taste evolves over time.
