I noticed today when I was looking at a Fifty Fathoms watch that it said no. 843 on the back of the case. Does that mean it is the 843 fifty fathoms produced?

But I'm also pretty sure that more than 843 were made, since 2007.

However, the number is not necessarily representative the actual quantity of watches produced. Blancpain does at times entertain request of dealers for special numbers. So, theoretically, it could be the case that only 400 pieces were manufactured, but a dealer requested five of them to have serial numbers starting with 1970 (e.g. because the dealer started business then).

Blancpain does not provide information on total quantity manufacturered (except for limited editions, where the info is given) or the specific year of manufacture.

So can we safely assume that if I purchased a FF Chrono with the n°92 on the back that it is the 92 second watch manufactured of the series?

it is stated that Blancpain would entertain numbers on request even if they exceed the current production number. Of course, limited editions are excluded, you will not see a 123 out of 100.

That being said, the watch number still is a relatively reliable indication on the position of your watch in the production run, as request like above are rarely voiced.

to accurately date a vintage FF.

i asked him after reading his suberb posts on the FF and i thought i might eventually build up a collection of iconic watches made in 1964. it seems the only way to do this with a FF is to have its original papers.

I fear that it is impossible to know the Production Date...

Even if you have the original papers of the watch, it will only give you the Date of purchase, not the date of production...

In my "black book" there is a machine typed note with all the notes for the water resistance checks. I notice the number of the back from the watch (n´XXX) is handwritten on the same note.
Since the note tells me (production brassus) the date/year and the time when they test my watch, I assumed it´s close to the production of the watch.
Do I got it all wrong..?
