They used to print the year on the dial but do you do it by spotting certain dial case combinations?

On spotting the "LE" on this model year Mille Miglia, at face value, the only difference is, the BLACK subdials on the LE version. If you scroll down this post, you will actually see another, MM (non LE, but still beautiful), GMT, Chrono, with WHITE subdials.
- If you take the watch off, I believe the NON-LE (White Subdial), has a display back, while the limited edition, has the Mille Miglia race map of italy, imprinted on the case back.
Other than that, I believe they are identical...

In case, you want the Ref number :

1) for the white dial with rubber straps - 16 8992-3003.

2) black dial with rubber straps - 16 8992 -3001

     I own a '97 Chopard LUC and purchased in USA.  It's about 36mm wide and has a double barreled 100 hour automatic movement.  I'm the original owner, but don't know the model name.  Any help in identifying the model would be of great assistance.

Based on the photograph of the dial and case, that is not an Chopard L.U.C. watch i.e. with the recent L.U.C. movement.

It could be what was known simply as a 'Chopard Automatic' ref. 16/1223 with a Frederic Piguet Cal.1160 movement.
Officially, the case diameter is 35.4mm which is close to 36mm, as you say. The two variations are yellow or white gold cases.

Still a nice looking watch!

The Certificate of Origen states it's a 16/1223.  It seems in 1997, though, Chopard must have been thinking of branding this model as a LUC as LUC is printed on the winding crown.

for Chopard and the practice pre-dates the current crop of L.U.C. movements.

It was an early 'logo' of Louis-Ulysse Chopard and has been used almost interchangeably with the 'Chopard signature'. It has found its way back onto the winding micro-rotors of the x.96 movements instead of the Chopard cursive signature...oooer....that caused some rancour amongst the fans, I can tell you!
