Another Unique Dial Technique - Marquetry
Hello Friends
Continuing on the topic of dial-making.... we have heard and seen various techniques on substrates like porcelain, sapphire, enamel, urushi, MOP, metal (using techniques like mokume gane or maki-e) and various minerals.
How about with wood?
The technique or craft is called Marquetry.
It is the craft of covering a structure with pieces of veneers (could be various type of wood, laminated shell, metals, ivory, but typically wood) forming decorative patterns, designs or pictures. It was popular for clock cases from 1675 to 1725.
A good article could be found on BHI website. ( Please click here to access).
I was not aware Chopard has done watches with marquetry. Came across it while reading a past article. I was curious and wanting to know more about the technique used and watch so I asked Chopard for some information. Hope some of you are interested too.

This Leopard Head Marquetry dial was made up of 280 pieces from 12 different types of wood in a 43 X 43 mm casing. Marvellous!

Saudara Kong, the wooden dial is awesome.
I am curious to find out the effect of the dial when tropical wood, especially Sabah hard wood or "kayu malam" from Indonesia is being used. One advantage of the use of hard wood is that the dial will not easily warp.

Hmmmm, I'm also very keen to see one...
not sure if the dial is 'lacquered' or coated with a layer of protective.

Interesting pieces!
If this is the piece I'm thinking about that I saw at an AD down here, it looks interesting through the display case. I forgot which animal it was, and I'm not sure if it was Chopard or Corum that made that watch (guess it has to be Chopard after reading your post) but I'm sure Art or DavidP would know cause they were with me that day. Huge price tag too!
