I wanted to share a bit of my Basel World experience with the team. For those that have not beenI highly recommend it. Switzerland in general is a pleasure and the excitement of Basel World only adds to it.
Swiss Air flight from the US to Zurich. One sleeping pill and poof you're there.
Post-Flight nourishment at the Zeughauskeller
A former Basel World star is along for the trip
Zurich always looks so Swiss (a good thing)
The train service in Switzerland is so nice. A pleasure.
Arriving at Basel SBB in an hour's time. A short tram ride and
The BIG brand names are front and center
Here are Live Photos of some of what I though were the highlights. First, my 3 favorites
The re-issue of the Seamaster 300
And the original, which the had to compare. I have to say the reissue looks great. Happy it is 39mm. Even small details like the hippocampus in the center of the crystal were honored. Like the original it's just a gorgeous design. My only issue with it is it's a bit blingy because it does not have that all-over patina which is harmonious with a patina dial. If I had to choose between the new one and the original I'd take the original. (The movement is more beautiful too). I'm very happy to have my CK 14755. (Thanks Nicholas ) but I would consider one of these at what I consider a very fair price.
I also absolutely loved the re-issue of the Seiko 62 MAS, Seiko's first diver from 1965. Its larger at 42mm but otherwise faithful. The dial is gorgeous. The original is impossible to find. I searched extensively for one when I was in Tokyo last year and couldn't find one. (I don't think they exported many, or maybe any). Here's the original, which they showed side by side
My next highlight is one that caught me by surprise because I never had too much love for it. The skydweller with gorgeous blue dial and in steel
A special award must go to Jacob & Co which, in addition to crazy blingy watches suited for an entertainer or sports star, they offered visitors complimentary caviar and Dom Perrignon champagne. I easily earned back the cost of the ticket (60 SF) with the amount of champagne and caviar I consumed here. As an added bonus, they also had the most gorgeous models in the show who were happy to be photographed.
Now back to watches. Here are some others I picked to share
The new Sea Dweller. It's BIG
A former Basel world star which still seems to get attention Every Patek movement with a corresponding video you could view. Very cool Daytona on rubber Crazy complications Advanced research aquanaut Not a novelty but amazing. They picked a great one to show 1957 Trilogy
It's been a while since a moon phase from Rolex Jacob Well done and stunning decor all around Many are raving about this but it doesn't grab me Glashutte Wow! Wow again Post-show meal at Bindella back in Zurich. (The pasta was delish. A had a red wine because I was a bit chilled). Until next time
thanks for sharing your experience. Like the new Sky Dweller too. The Sky Dweller and the new LE Fifty Fathoms 40mm caught my eye and apparently both are in the same MSRP bracket.
did you manage to get some images from the Jacob&Co watches? Missed them this year!
Best, Magnus
P.S.: the Swiss Railways fooled you - your train was German fast train, first generation model (easily recognisable with the rooftop windows in the train restaurant). There is nothing comparable with Swiss railways (and even the later iterations of german federal railways were not that attractive in my view). These trains go from the north of Germany directly to Zurich, and can be normally booked with Swiss Railways.
