I am new to the Omega forum and to the brand; in fact, I never considered buying an Omega watch until I saw the collab between Swatch and Omega. I always heard about the Speedmaster but never really gave it attention or considered it. But when I saw the collab watch and started reading about the Speedmaster I fell in love with it.
I am currently considering the 310.30.42.50.01.001 and would like to know your opinion on the watch? I personally love it but I am a bit confused on whether I should get it or buy the sapphire crystal reference. The idea of seeing the movement is also cool. Having said so, I still prefer to own a watch that is closer to the original model and that's why I am leaning towards the .001. And by the way, I am not a vintage watch person so that's why I didn't consider an older reference.
I would also like to mention that I haven't seen the watch in person yet and I don't know if it will fit well or not. I have a relatively small wrist (around 16 cm) so what do you guys think? Trying the watch is not an option for the time being as I am not close to any Omega store or dealer. My plan is to buy it from the duty free on my way back to my county.
I look forward to getting your feedback/opinion/suggestions on the watch (esp the Hesalite crystal) before I pull the trigger.
Go for it and either version is superb. Make the decision based on your own personal preference and if you would like to see the movement and have the tougher sapphire glass you have the answer.
As a big Omega fan and previous owner of the "Sapphire sandwich" version and current owner of the older 1861-001 with Hesalite..

I recommend the Hesalite version if you wont be afraid of the hesalite scratching. If that will bother you or worry you I would go with the sapphire sandwich. Nut there is something about the hesalite that makes it a different watch... I have owned both and now would not even think about the sapphire option even though seeing the movement is cool...
Either way you really cant go wrong! Both are great watches and think you would be please with wither option!
and it’s been a massive headache since I bought it. It stops working every nine months (right now the timekeeping works but the chronograph doesn’t) and it took six months to get back from omega the last time it was repaired. I also feel like for the money I spent I should have at least gotten a column wheel chronograph, and that the inferior lever and cam system is probably why it’s so faulty.
The mechanical issues early production cal 3861 movements had with a bushing . . .

. . . and lubrication protocols were corrected within months of their initial reports. Assuming yours was returned to Omega almost immediately after purchase, it should now have the replacement bushing that doesn't cause premature wear on the center wheel.
I bought the sapphire version 18+ months ago and still enjoy it to this day and will never let it go. Works brilliantly as both an only watch, and as part of a collection. I love the history of it, the style, and the movement. It is (IMO) a reasonably versatile and tough mechanical tool watch, and a "strap monster". As for which one, well, my fellow forum colleagues will of course be much more knowledgeable than me, so once reading through their take on each, it will essentially be down to you trying both on and deciding. A win either way.
Thank you very much for sharing these pictures! And I do agree this watch looks great on almost every strap. I know for a fact that when I get mine I will change the strap frequently. It feels like you got a new watch. Wear your watch in great health!
do so but it won’t be before 2-3 months because I am out of my country. However I might pay for the watch in advance because I got an excellent offer and want to secure it.
all for your kind replies and pictures. I think I will go for the Sapphire crystal option for its durability and the see through case back. I know I said I wanted something close to the original watch but I am usually someone who doesn’t like scratches so I think I will regret buying the Hesalite and will spend my time worried about scratching the crystal instead of enjoying the watch itself.
