Hello Omega Afficionados,

There have been so many variations of the iconic Speedy Pro to the point that it gets a bit confusing for an Omega newbie.  Which among the Speedy Pro variants that are still in production do you guys prefer and why?

This might help some of the newcomers in their quest for their first Speedy Pro.

i would go with the "Standard" Speedy pro.   It was good enough for NASA it is more then fine for my use !

crystal, manual wind, and no display back.

I agree with Chris and Bill - The NASA standard hesalite crystal, solid case back manually wound and for me, on a black alligator.That said, I own a bomb-proof Mark II which has just returned from Omega re-finished and new glass which looks fantastic and is a joy to own. The upshot of what I am saying is - get any, they're all great!!!

I know and it is true the "original is original" although the cal is not  861 (nor 321 :0) ) any more but 1861 ......

but is so damn attractive to have transparent case back and enjoy the cal 1863 .....

I'm also torn between the one with solid (approved by NASA) and one with Transparent (not approved by NASA)

so basically there are two options in my opinion if you are after Speedy Pro

Reference

3573.50.00 (cal 1863, transparent case back, sapphire crystal, not approved by NASA)

and reference

3570.50.00 (cal. 1861, solid case back, hesalite crystal, approved by NASA)

 

basically if you enjoy like I do most of all seeing cal and playing with chrono while looking at it go for first

if you wanna something closest to one that was on Moon as you can go for second

but , I would suggest you also try and track down the Apollo XVII ' Last man on the Moon ' Limited Edition ,
if NASA gets the funding then Mr Cernan very well may NOT be the last man on the moon ,
which i think will make this watch all that more desirable , just a hunch .

As members here have suggested the 3570.50 will be a very nice watch to have and in terms of buying new, as close to the original as you can get.

I love my 3573.50 because I like the clarity of the sapphire and the display back allows me to view the lovely, decorated rhodium-plated cal 1863.

However here are some alternatives from the pre-loved market -

3572.50
which is hesalite-fronted but has a display back in sapphire so you can view the movement. Earlier models ( 3592.50 ) have a YG-plated cal 863 movement while later models use the Cal 1863 that is Rhodium-plated.

3570.50 as mentioned

145.022
which is pre 3570.50. Some may still be found and pre-92 models have the cal 861 in pink-gold following which they were changed to YG plating. Earlier models also feature the S and r of the Speedmaster legend slightly elongated. Just makes it a little more desirable

Early cal321 models but you'll need further advice than what I can manage on these.

Again all pre-loved and the ones you are more likely to see/find are the -
Apollo XVII mentioned by Chrisfrombyron,
On occasion, the Apollo XI 30th Anniversary with the  " Hello Houston....." caseback
Some models from the Missions Series which will have the mission patch on the continuous seconds counter
Very desirable - the Snoopy Edition

Hunt around and you may still find the part RG-plated Apollo XV LE from dealers

Remember that the values of Speedies on the pre-loved market has increased markedly over the past twelve months, from 25 to nearly 50%. A year ago you could find a pre-loved 3570.50 for around $1250. Now they can go anywhere from $1650 to $1850.
