Omega

Has anyone ever seen an Omega 1953 RAF that had NO arrow (neither fat nor thin)?

I have seen one at a respectable dealer and the seemingly original unretouched dial shows no trace of an arrow and no signs of removal.

Any ideas?  The markings on the case back, movement, everything else looks perfect.

I am not at all worried about a fake from this dealer - just wondering if the Omega folks had ever seen such a specimen?

look at the poor quality of the printing with ragged and fringed edges.

Probably the arrow symbol was typographically too difficult and has been omitted. Case is looking fine.

there are quite a few out there (100,000 originally) so you might be better to look around for a better example. even check the online auction sites as there are a lot of very reputable dealers there with good examples.

sorry about the poor quality pic, but this is the one i sold 3 years ago and is how it should look.

The 100,000 was a overall number of watches Omega made for the British Gov. Out of that 100,000 watches a small % was for the RAF 53 .  Here is the order info for the CK 2777 showing  5,900 units ordered.  I do not know if more was ordered after this.  But I cant not see Omega making 100,000 CK 2777,  we would have seen alot more in the field over the years.  Another observation I have seen alot more Omega WWW then RAF 53 would would indicate more WWW were produced then RAF 53s.

I saw several spotting here and there and was curious to know how many were made.

Will have to compare with its JLC sister.

for the british. that was an overall number of issued watches. incl. timor, cyma, jlc, iwc and all the others. that explains the "holes" in the number system, we see on these examples. omega produced 5900 watches from ref. 2777 and the numbers go up to 9000 plus. in the meantime they issued jlc, iwc and others in the same year 1953.and that is the same for the other years. i just found the omega order for the first mil. watch from 1942. 2000 pcs. ordered. i`m still searching for the order form for omegas WWW. i have it somewhere, john diethelm gave that to me many years ago. will scan in the other first order later. and to the watch in this thread: the dial could be from an commonwealth issued example; have seen a few without the arrow of the kings. kind regards. achim

Hi there,

I have one of these which has no arrow or chapter band. I know my father had it since the sixties or before. It has the correct numbers on the back but there is a variation in the punched fonts. The serial number is 3680/53 but the 3680 does not match the style of the other numbers 6645 101000 and 6B/542. Until I started investigating recently I believed it was my fathers army issue watch - obviously not since the war was over when it was made!!

The first item they'll be asking for is photos.  Can you provide macros of the movement, dial, and both aspects of the caseback?

....  this is not too bad.   The MOD redials, when radium had to be changed to tritium,  are of a similar approximate (and low) quality.

If you want to have the classic fat-arrow Omega 1953, just ask the dealer to mount the other dial.    If it is just an enjoyable watch to have on the wrist that you want, it is not going to be of a much worse quality than the fat-arrow MOD redial.

At the end is a question of how you feel,  and price/value considerations.
