It's even more twisted... check out Star Trek episode(s) "The Menagerie"...
Sean David Kenney played the crippled 'Captain' Christopher Pike in that episode and the healthy Pike was "played" by Jeffrey Hunter (of the original pilot)... Kenney was thus another 'captain' ; ) IMHO the back story to the two part show ("The Menagerie") is quite interesting.
